In this episode, we get to meet his cousins, Mayblossom and Feeder Haggen. Mayblossom has traveled to Dodge City from Texas in search of Festus, because her father and Festus's father agreed the two would marry when they reached adulthood. One of the bits of Haggen trivia we learn from this episode is they hail from Texas. This arrangement is a problem for both Mayblossom and Festus, because neither is especially interested in marrying the other. Mayblossom is actually in love with another Haggen cousin named Feeder, but she is resigned and devoted to the original marriage agreement. Festus doesn't know about Mayblossom's love for Feeder, but he knows one way he can avoid marriage is to find another man to marry his cousin.

Festus Haggen played by Ken Curtis is Matt Dillon 's deputy marshal and one of the main characters of Gunsmoke who would first appear in the Season 8 episode " Us Haggens " episode 13, December 8, Originally starting as a scruffy hillman who wanted revenge on his uncle for killing his brother, he eventually became Matt Dillon's deputy and one of his friends. From his first appearance in Season 8, Festus would remain with the series for the rest of its network run on CBS, through Season 20, in close to episodes. Festus heretofore a comic feature, came to town in a episode titled "Us Haggens" to avenge the death of his twin brother Fergus, and decided to stay in Dodge when the deed was done.
