Final endeavour
Many TV shows are well past their prime by the time they hit their final season. Not Endeavour. The magnificent British series, a prequel to another mystery drama classic, Inspector Morse , bid farewell to American viewers Sunday night, July 2, on PBS with shocking resolutions, heartbreaking goodbyes and even a bit of Shakespeare. We got new insight into the beleaguered and brilliant Endeavour Morse Shaun Evans by watching him evolve from a neophyte detective constable into someone more like the jaded loner played by John Thaw in the original series. That leads to one of the explanations the final season promised to deliver: why Thursday is never mentioned by his former partner in the original series. He comes from the ingenious brain of Russell Lewis, the prolific scribe who wrote every Endeavour episode, so he had yet to be invented when the original series was airing. Thursday stabbed the young man to protect his son, Sam Jack Bannon , returning to the series after leading the cast of Pennyworth for three seasons. Thursday can never see Morse again. That turn of events will give added poignancy to anyone now watching Inspector Morse which streams on BritBox. Decades later, the woman Morse loved so much is still nearby. References to the original series were numerous, and clever. Surely this is the same Robert Lewis who will become the sergeant sidekick — played by Kevin Whately — on Inspector Morse and get his own spinoff series, Inspector Lewis , in Young Endeavour Morse drove off in his black Jaguar. Is it too soon to go back and rewatch the pilot?
Thursday, unwilling to close the case after a suspect confessed to Benford's murder but was also charged with Andrews's murder, patrols the towpath at night. The next morning, final endeavour, as the ward staff arrive on shift, they discover that Bakewell, who final endeavour to have been in recovery, has died.
Footage of a funeral, motorcycles, and the creation of a wedding dress opens "Exeunt," the series finale of Endeavour. Given the progression of the series with its twists and turns over the decade, we are prepared to accept not every issue will be resolved — from the beginning, Endeavour has reminded us life is uncertain, compared to the truths of great music, literature, or architecture. Writer Russell Lewis and director Kate Saxon indulge in a certain amount of fantasy in this episode, but they and the superb cast and production team make it all work. Our revels now are ended. Once again, Morse is at Blenheim Vale, where excavations continue, but not for much longer. Morse is convinced that the remains of Peter Williams, a victim who was never accounted for, are buried there, while Thursday and Bright are anxious for the case to be closed.
Clearly the killer knew their victim well, but who are they? Fortunately our hero, music-loving DS Endeavour Morse, who is having a decorous flirtation with Poole, is in the audience. He finds an incriminating note written on sheet music with an alto clef — which, as he knows and you really should, suggests the viola player may have ground the fateful nuts. The scene is Oxford, , and Morse is a man out of temper with the times. This episode, entitled Prelude, is like being happily trapped for an hour and half with escapees from an Iris Murdoch novel.
Final endeavour
This last episode of the Inspector Morse prequel had issues to wrap up — and did it with style. From brilliantly excruciating moments to its intriguing ending, it stayed true to itself. F ans of a TV show always fear the finale will end with death. In the case of Endeavour, which has just bowed out after 11 years, we knew the police protagonist — Sgt Morse, played by Shaun Evans — must survive.
