Electric powered foam rc airplanes, or 'foamies', are now mainstream within the radio control flying hobby, popular with beginners and experts alike. They represent great value for money and it's easy to see why they're such big sellers. Foam planes come in all different shapes and sizes, and manufacturers have really upped their game by producing some excellent scale planes notably warbirds. Scale detailing such as rivets and panel lines can easily be designed in to the moulding process, and so a finished foamie can look almost as good as a scratch-built balsa plane that the builder has poured hundreds of hours in to. The downside to the appearance of a foam rc plane is, erm, the foam! Up close the surface texture can clearly be seen, but does that matter when the plane is in the air??

The sheets are also precise and have foam rc planes large format, which is how I was able to make the modular fuselage of my Buster test airplane and the shaped wing of my Atlatl Glider. Many glues commonly used in rc airplane building and repairs will dissolve some types of foam, and CA cyanoacrylate or 'super glue' glues are some of the worst offenders.

The third video I have of the plane flying was a very old video I took with my really bad camera. As soon as my new camera comes in the mail I will make a better video of the plane fly. Also the complete video instructions will be out in within another month or so! So stay subscribed! It was also sold in a folded, perforated form that was as thin as hobby sheet foam. Up close the surface texture can clearly be seen, but does that matter when the plane is in the air?? What probably makes this foam so popular is its price and availability. I have discovered that the alcohol can be applied with a brush or even a q-tip if you need to remove small areas of paper. Using Foam to Build Airplanes. This is a bigger issue if you're just learning to fly. The Cessna , constructed a few years back, was entirely built from BluCor foam, except for the tail, which was made from Readi-Board. Indeed, manufacturers do now sell certain foamies with such stabilisation as standard. I built several airplanes from sheets of BlueCor when it was available. The sheet size is only 20 x 30 inches, which is small for many of my designs. Another foam I experimented with in my early days was BlueCor. My email is Jason. Depron is relatively strong, but it does need to be used in conjunction with carbon spars or balsa to optimise the strength. FMS were the first company to enter the larger wingspan around mm market.

Remote control RC planes are a fun and exciting hobby for enthusiasts around the world.

Spray a light mist on the paper and let it soak in for about 15 minutes. It was often used in building full-scale, moldless, composite, experimental airplanes because of its superior strength-to-weight ratio. The downside to the appearance of a foam rc plane is, erm, the foam! The paper backing is also not glued to the foam, so over time, with exposure to humidity and flight stresses, the paper will begin to delaminate. This can be prevented by coating the foam with wood varnish and a sealer, but this adds unnecessary complexity to simple park flyers. I hope you got something out of this column. Readi-Board is extremely easy to cut. By removing the paper on one side, it can bend around curves to create complex shapes. You can use Value XPS to fold airfoil shapes by adding a layer of tape to support the leading edge curve during bending. On the sheets I have purchased, the paper will not peel away cleanly.
