He's the suave, smart, and sneaky fox who won the hearts of a plethora of Disney fans and possibly a certain rabbit as well — he's the one and only, Nick Wilde. Next to his bunny buddy, Judy Hopps, Nick is one half of Zootopia 's dynamic duo and the two are easily some of Disney's best animal characters. But there's more to the sly guy than popsicles and Hawaiian shirts. In fact, the fox many fans know and love is far from the original concepts during the film's early drafts. So what was he like before he went from conman to lawman?

Finnick is a male fennec fox and a supporting character in Zootopia. Finnick is a lithe, squat-bodied fennec fox with tan fur. He has a cream-colored face, paw pads and ears, from which sprout feathery, white hairs. His outfit consists of a a black shirt with a vertical red stripe, olive-green shorts, and dark sunglasses. Nick is trying to buy a Jumbo-pop for Finnick, saying that his "son" loves all things elephant and wants to be one, but the owner Jerry Jumbeaux, Jr. Judy Hopps , hearing everything, steps forward and reminds Jerry about the health codes the employees are violating and threatens to shut him down unless he gives them the Jumbo-pop, to which he reluctantly agrees. After thanking Judy, Nick reaches for his wallet, but realizes that he "forgot it" and apologizes to Finnick for "ruining his birthday". As they leave, Judy, feeling sympathy towards them, pays for the Jumbo-pop herself. Outside, Nick thanks Judy, and she tells Finnick she respects his "dream" of becoming an elephant, giving him a ZPD sticker. As they take their leave, Judy resumes her meter maid duties. At Sahara Square , she sees Finnick, exiting a van. She excitedly rushes up to him to greet him but stops when she sees him holding a jar with Jumbo-pop juice melted by Nick.

As a child, Nick had a dream to join the local Junior Ranger Scouts , as he always wanted to be part of a pack. When he was 8 or 9 years old, his mother scraped up enough money to buy a brand new scout uniform, giving him the opportunity to join a local troop. Though he was the only predator and only fox in the local troop, Nick believed that would not matter and attended his initiation with confidence and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, his "initiation" turned out to be a cruel hazing prank where young Nick was ridiculed, knocked to the ground and held down while being muzzled by the other scouts for being a fox as foxes are considered untrustworthy.
