There are few villainous factions in fiction more iconic than Star Wars ' Galactic Empire. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, its infinite war machine has terrorized a galaxy far, far away almost from the first note of composer John Williams' bombastic opening theme. It is an Empire that has suffered a shortage of competent officers, that is true, but among those who've demonstrated their capabilities against the fledgling Rebel Alliance, few are remembered more fondly by fans and greater feared by Rebels than General Maximilian Veers. Considering Star Wars ' present commitment to fan service, it seems high time that Veers makes a return to the battlefield. There are several reasons for Veers' status as one of the Empire's most beloved officers, not the least of which is his leadership during one of its greatest victories on the ice world of Hoth. His time on-screen is relatively brief, but actor Julian Glover portrays him as efficient, calm and competent, a far cry from the bumbling First Order that would later take up the Imperial mantle. In the old canon, Veers was also critical to the development of the AT-AT walker , one of the Empire's most efficient and memorable terror weapons.

Veers was famous for his leadership during the Imperial assault on the then Rebellion-occupied Hoth system, during which he led a squadron of AT-AT walkers past Rebel defenses and personally destroyed the shield generator powering Rebel base's deflector shield. His leadership in the battle was critical to the successful takeover of the Hoth planetary system, a key victory for the Galactic Empire. Veers himself was critically injured during the battle when a Rogue Squadron snowspeeder crashed into his AT-AT's cockpit, destroying the walker, but ultimately survived. In time, he came to serve as an army officer of the Galactic Empire, an authoritarian regime that governed most of the galaxy. As such, he was involved in the Empire's struggle against the Rebel Alliance, which contested the rule of Emperor Palpatine. Rising in the ranks through cunning and courage, Veers took part in over a dozen battles, including conflicts against the Zalorians on Zaloriis and the Culroonians on Culroon III. Aside from being a brilliant army officer, Veers was also a husband and a father. Veers was eventually assigned to the Death Star battle station, but was ultimately not on board during the Battle of Yavin, where it was destroyed by the Rebel Alliance. The destruction of the Death Star also helped accelerate his career due to the large amount of Imperial officers killed during the battle. Following the Battle of Yavin, Veers already served as a general. At that time, he was tasked with hunting down a governor who betrayed the Empire and locating the former senator Johhar Kessen. The Empire believed that Kessen would play a key role in finding the location of the Rebel Alliance's new headquarters, and for the duration of that mission, Veers was assisted by Captain Kosh, an officer stationed on Tatooine and in command of the 68th Legion.

The field is strong enough to deflect any bombardment. In fairness, I have a Star Warsie fascination with all of the characters in the franchise, but there are some who really stand out and captivate me, and Veers is definitely one of them. So what exactly is the reason for my interest in the character that Julian Glover brought to life in ESB? Well, much of it boils down to the scene in which Veers informs Lord Vader that the fleet has moved out of lightspeed. Standing before Darth Vader , General Veers exudes the poise and self-confidence one would expect from an Imperial officer. In short, what this exchange says about General Veers is clear: he is a clear cut example of military professionalism.

When the storm blows, weeds bend. In turn, leading from the front in his Imperial Walker — Blizzard One — he can react much more quickly to the ways in which the battle might change. When Professor Ud pointed out that the Rebels had used at least one ancient site in the past, Veers assembled a team of archaeological consultants that notably included the rogue scholar Chelli Aphra. His plot involved tricking Lando Calrissian and his partner R2-D2 into gathering old droids and reusing their parts to build battle droids. When the message recalling the remaining Imperial forces to the Deep Core arrived, Veers, like many other officers searching for a new hope, answered it and reported to the Imperial Fleet orbiting Byss. However, in the new canon his post-Hoth story has yet to unfold. While it is interesting to ponder the sort of notoriety General Veers received after his victory on the icy plains of Hoth, my larger question remains: what happened to him after his brief appearance in The Empire Strikes Back? So what exactly is the reason for my interest in the character that Julian Glover brought to life in ESB?
