Genki One is one of the most recognized, beginner Japanese textbooks for a reason. It's extremely effective. For everyone else, let's dive in Admittedly, I had also fallen into a comfortable routine, which didn't include much studying. One reason I walked away from eikaiwa teaching was that I seldom had the chance to use Japanese. I felt like I was being coddled. It's fine until you actually have to communicate for yourself, in Japanese, away from the shelter of your eikaiwa bubble. Walk away? With this being Japan and all, I figured the time would come to have speak for myself, in Japanese. One instance of this, way before I knew about Transferwise, was sending money home for the first time. My first couple of transfers were manual. Luckily, I was able to get money transferred, but it was tough! Not to mention I felt really stupid and semi-embarrassed for not know enough Japanese to say what I wanted to say. There were times when I would get lost on the train or on the street no iphone at the time and having trouble even getting basic directions.

For example the first chapter alone has over 50 new words.

I even refereed to it my review of that atrocity of a book Al-Kitaab. Genki is a triumph of a book and it is hard for me to pinpoint what is great about it. It was just a standard language textbook to me. Honestly it took me a long time to see how great this book really is especially when compared to other Japanese textbooks. First of all I want to say this book is FUN. It is filled with cute little pictures, cultural notes, and fun little dialogues. If you are thinking about learning Japanese I highly recommend this book along with the workbook.

Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese is a textbook for learners of Japanese language that starts at an absolute beginner level. Genki I has an orange scheme, while Genki II has a green color scheme. Genki I focuses on beginner-level Japanese, from kana on through adjective and verb constructions, and Genki II continued on to intermediate-level topics.
