From vines originally planted way back in , hence the nickname if you have ever seen an ancient vine, they are impossibly gnarled and amazing old things. Open fermenters, hand plunging, basket pressing and time in both new and two-year-old oak barrels — all the love and care one would hope that such venerable old grapes would receive from highly regarded winemaker, Jo Irvine. Deep maroon, this is rich and concentrated. Plums, aniseed, bay leaves, cigar box notes, cloves, dark berries and more — all quite savoury. Some quality oak here but well integrated underscored by fine tannins. There is great length here, as well as accompanying intensity, giving a good 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure. Pinot from the Pyrenees in Victoria, fermentation was in open topped vessels. A pale garnet hue, the nose gives us notes of red cherries, smoked.
