The death of Raditz , Goku 's brother, happened at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z , and it was one of the rare perhaps unique instances where Goku did not regret the death of a foe, however, it might have been a mistake. Thanks to some momentous revelations in one of Dragon Ball Super 's recent chapters, the decision to kill his brother is not only just a mistake, but one of Goku's biggest ever. Goku belongs to the Saiyans, a powerful warrior race that makes a living conquering and selling planets. Strength is everything for a Saiyan, and their battle potential is assessed at birth. Goku's father, Bardock , was a low-class warrior who showed great potential and died trying to stop the galactic tyrant Frieza from destroying the Saiyan's planet, Vegeta.

It follows the Piccolo Jr. Saga and precedes the Vegeta Saga. This saga is the first part of the Saiyan Saga with the rest of said saga being the Vegeta Saga. Goku surprises everyone by bringing along his four-year-old son, Gohan, who is not becoming a martial artist due to Chi-Chi wanting him to keep studying and not getting himself into danger with him fighting all the time.

He is incredibly manipulative, begging for Goku to let him go when Goku grabs his tail to weaken him. Goku does and Raditz damages him tremendously, and begins to crush his ribs, taunting him on his stupidity, laughing. Raditz can also be quite a coward when facing death, as he kept struggling and begging with panic in his usually arrogant attitude when facing Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon. While the Dragon Ball franchise is now completely different from when it first began, what really started this shift was the first major arc of Dragon Ball Z.
