I f Gozzard Yachts had a mantra, it might be comfort and safety. Ted Gozzard was 80 years old when he died in In the early s, he and his brother, Haydn, founded the Bayfield Boat Yard in Ontario, where they designed and built fiberglass cruising sailboats. But Gozzard had a different vision of boatbuilding in mind. In he founded North Castle Marine Ltd. On leaving the RAF in Gozzard came to Ontario and worked in the construction business in London, Ontario, where he designed and supervised the construction of homes and subdivisions. In his spare time he built and sailed a much modified Thunderbird. In the Caribbean the Gozzard and family experienced multihull sailing for the first time, enjoying the speed combined with space and shoal draft. In the early part of Gozzard relocated to the Village of Bayfield, Ontario. One of the main reasons for residing in Bayfield was to carry out testing on Manta. Bayfield Boat Yard followed shortly as the company Ted was doing business as. Gary eventually became one of the original partners and if anyone deserves credit for helping start BBY it is Gary Ferguson. In Gozzard became involved with designing and building a schooner named Twilight which was built on the waterfront in Bayfield. The Twilight was advertised, and many inquiries came. One individual who inquired wanted to build a smaller version of the Twilight. This smaller version, at 23 feet 7. BBY in Bayfield, Ontario. Gozzard felt a trained eye had a better chance of producing a beautiful boat. Gozzard also offered to modify any aspect of a Bayfield boat for an existing owner as part of his design services, at no charge.

One was that the ocean, the true arena for such a boat, was beyond our reach. The helm responded naturally on all points of sail, and under the full-battened main, percent genoa, and a generously proportioned staysail, she showed surprising power. The ride was so agreeable on a close reach that we abandoned plans for a lunch stop, broke out the sandwiches, and left our drinks untended on the steering console as the water rushed under the keel.
