Horseback riding on the beach is a thrill. Horseback riding at all is a thrill to me, but there is just something magical about riding alongside the sea. This particular beach is especially interesting for its haystack rocks, green acres beach & trail rides, black sand and abundance of sand dollars, how beautiful is that? We were staying in Lincoln Cityand it was less than a half hour to get to the beach front stable in Pacific City.

Within a couple minutes the waves of the Pacific Ocean will be crashing toward you as you make your into Bob Straub State Park. When it is time to double back we turn up into the Sand Dunes that give awesome views of the park interior. The ride goes back to the waters edge for the home stretch. Our 2 hour Park Tour caters to the more experienced riders that are looking for more than a relaxing ride on the beach. This ride will leave the waters edge early and head towards the Nestucca river and follow it all almost all the way to the end of the spit.

This ride is geared for experienced riders only and reservations must be made over the phone. They are not timid or easily spooked like you would think.

The reserve was established in and now covers hectares of open dunes and beach. It is typical of most sand dune systems with high dune ridges and dune valleys containing slacks. Slacks are low hollows formed by wind-blow, often flooded during the winter which contain many unusual plants and animals. Some slacks provide ideal breeding pools for Natterjacks. The reserve is rich in plant life. During the summer months damp slacks are carpeted with flowers including Early-marsh Orchid, Marsh Helleborine and Grass of Parnassus. In drier slacks the Round-leaved Wintergreen and nationally rare Dune Helleborine can be found. The Velvet Trail. The trail is a circular route following the Green Beach from Weld Road southwards, then winding through the dunes back to Weld Road. The trail takes its name from the carpets of lush vegetation seen there in the early summer months.
