It is a film which helped former West Ham United defender Fabian Balbuena learn English, a film that helped ex-striker Enner Valencia settle in and a film which, 18 years after its release, remains a cult classic. This is the story of Green Street. Of how the West Ham and Millwall rivalry storyline was inspired by two lower league clubs in Germany, why there were initial fears about casting Wood and why a member of the cast has a mural at a Tunisian football club. She had been nominated for an Oscar for her short film on U. But Alexander wanted to make a film based on her experiences. I flew to Hollywood, I was there for just over a week and we had a basic script. No one gives a shit about me.

Green Street Hooligans. By Eric Goldman. Filled with pent up anger and frustration, Matt finds an outlet for his repressed feelings when he meets Pete, played by Charlie Hunnam. A true football that's soccer for us Americans fanatic, Pete introduces Matt to the members of his so-called "firm," a group of fellow West Ham United supporters, whose organization and tendency to get in dangerous fights with rival teams' firms often evokes the feeling of a gang. Soon, Matt finds himself a full-fledged member of the firm, and goes from being scared of the constant violence they find themselves immersed in, to embracing it and finding true thrills from it. Wood, who for the most part normally plays fairly innocent and good-natured characters, revealed what drew him to this role. One was that I didn't know a lot about hooligan culture. I'd heard of football violence but I didn't quite understand how intense it really is, how organized it is, and more importantly, how these people aren't necessarily criminals or thugs in their daily life. They almost have this sort of double life. They're people with families and some of them have relatively good jobs. That fascinated me. And also the opportunity of being able to take a character from that kind of relatively innocent place to essentially making him a hooligan was very attractive to me. To explore a darker side of humanity that I'd not really explored in film before just as an actor was an interesting challenge. And they invited me to go to all the football games with them. And I definitely found myself in a few verbal standoffs with the other guys.
Des wound me up so I just spat my gum in his face, which is horrible. You don't need to go out looking for it on the streets.
I am prone to insomnia. I'll lie in bed for a couple of hours, then go turn on the TV and flick through the channels until I find something that holds my attention, often on the film channels. I've seen it countless times now, though I'm not sure I've ever seen it in its entirety at one sitting — it tends to be 30 minutes here, 45 there, an hour somewhere else. But between all those partial sittings, I've managed several complete run-throughs. It's not that I'm a fan of the football hooligan genre — I've dabbled in one or two others and found them unwatchable, and have never read any of many and varied books about exploits on the InterCity trains — but there's a compelling awfulness about Green Street. Now, I'm afraid I need to give you some spoilers here.
But their firm is first-rate. West Ham is a London football team. The firms are quasi-military, the level of violence is brutal, and then the gang members return to their everyday lives as office workers, retail clerks, drivers, government servants, husbands and fathers. I first saw this world in Alan Clarke's " The Firm " , one of Gary Oldman's early performances, which showed in disturbing detail how his character was drawn into what the press calls "football hooliganism. They're all the more brutal because the gangs don't for the most part carry firearms, preferring to beat on each other with fists, bricks, iron bars and whatever else they can pick up.
