There are arancini, miniaturised into crisp-crusted two-bite w ond ers , bedded in pea puree and showered in a tangy fluff of Reggiano. Little squares of fried polenta get their cacio e pepe on with a blizzard of parmesan and spicy aioli. And s tuffed with a farce of chicken, pork and veal, the fried green olives champion the " luxe nonna" category. The mantra of simplicity guides a menu long enough it should come with a trigger warning for the indecisive.

Whenever Chris Lucas opens a restaurant on Flinders Lane, things tend to go pretty well. There was Chin Chin, which caused a tectonic shift — for a good few years at least — in the way that Melbourne restaurants looked and behaved. And now, there's Grill Americano, which opened last week. As the name suggests, the stars of the kitchens are a Josper charcoal grill and a custom-made woodfire oven imported from Naples, which are used across the majority of the broad menu's line-up of dishes. Grill Americano is inspired by Northern Italy's renowned steakhouses and namely Bistecca alla Fiorentina, the signature Tuscan dish of a thickly cut t-bone steak, traditionally cooked over hot coals. Alongside a host of other steaks on and off the bone , you'll also find woodfired pork belly, grilled swordfish and roasted scampi.

A splendid vision of terrazzo floors, royal-blue leather upholstery and a sweeping white marble bar twinkling with lamplight, Grill Americano brings retro glamour to its pursuit of produce-driven Italian perfection. There's a "hang the expense account" feel to it all, with white-jacketed waiters delivering Tuscan bistecca from the wood grill and scampi on saffron risotto. Mere mortals can paddle in the shallow end with the quotidian appeal of Bolognese-stuffed arancini, chilli-dusted octopus carpaccio drenched in fruity olive oil and velvety anchovies with puffy focaccia and green-olive butter. Was a little concerned about going to this restaurant based on all of the negative reviews but we ended up having a good dining experience. Service was friendly and timely. They have an exceptional wine list but it is crazy expensive. Loved the ambiance. This place is tricky to evaluate properly. I went here for my 60th Birthday and picked it due to a couple of good reviews. Urban List has it in their top 50 restaurants in Melbourne. Foolishly, I failed to go through all the Tripadvisor reviews, and as such, I have to confirm most of the negatives. Grill Americano looks the goods as you walk in.
