Harbor freight trailer for motorcycle
Has anybody done this? At most, two small bikes at once.
The 40 to Phoenix ride was the first multi day trip I had ever taken on a motorcycle. I was unsure about how to pack clothes for such a trip but I think I did ok. Every cubic inch of storage was used and I strapped a bag on the luggage carrier. This worked fine but there was a precise location for everything and if I did not pack everything in its location every morning then I had "extra" stuff that did not fit. I got tired of having to be so exact every morning. And when I bought a tee shirt there was no room for it.

I'm running with PTMS, a spare tire, spare hub. Running at 75 mph with degree ambient, the tires got pretty hot, the bearings did not, The highest bearing temperature I got was measured with the IR at the wheel just outside the outer races. The highest tread temperature I got was while my rear truck tires were running around I've never had a truck tire blow out in , miles. I like to see trailer tires run no more than 20 degrees higher than my truck tires which are lightly loaded 10 plys I'm not really sure why. I don't plan to change out the 12" trailer tires unless I start having issues. The big advantages to the trailer are cost, size for storage, and flexibly over a custom motorcycle trailer. One disadvantage is weight distribution. You need more weight upfront if you want to center your vtx over the little trailer, so you likely won't be able to add a permanent rear ramp like you could on a large trailer. In fact I store a 3' x 9' folding aluminum ramp upfront below the frame, which allows me to center the bike with good tongue weight.
Could be handy for a bike mount, or a pickup bed extension. Version 2.
It started when a used 40x48 Harbor Freight Utility Trailer showed up in a neighborhood yard sale. Since then it's lead me to fall back in love with the Vanagon, and has itself, had a thorough rebuild. I was torn. Do I really need a trailer? Where would I even put it? I had been into small Honda bikes for a couple of years and hand managed so far by either throwing them in the back of the Vanagon, or using this trailer hitch. Capable of lb bikes, that makes it overkill for the Hondas, but it's quality.
This is my first instructable but I have posted this on some kayak forums with positive feedback so I wanted to post it here and enter it into the outdoors competition. I started with harbor freight - Lb. Capacity Utility Trailer, 40" x 49". In addition to the trailer kit here is what I used for this project —. First I started by assembling the kit to have a starting point, make sure you square the basic frame and check several times while you tighten since the entire build is based off this. After you are happy with this point throw away the instructions because now the fun begins! I wanted to add a brace to connect the tongue directly to the spring hangers so I added this. I turned the frame around so the axle centerline would be farther forward since I will be extending the front. This will make weight distribution better and be easier to pull and track better. Now grind off all the powder coat on the joints then some welding.

The Harbor Freight folding trailer can be really helpful for motorcyclists. A lot of motorcyclists find it hard to get time off work, have little storage space, and financial constraints. It all makes a would-be traveling motorcyclist a little hesitant to get out of Dodge. Luckily you can pick up one of these Harbor Freight Folding Trailers for relatively cheap! The seats fold flat, even the front passenger, and I can easily fit a twin size air mattress in there. But what if I could have my cake, and eat it too? The idea of a trailer for bringing the bike along for the adventure just seemed fitting. Despite finding a house fit for motorcycling , and buying it when I was 25 , I still had two problems: Space, and money. The concept of the Harbor Freight folding trailer is wonderful, but in practice, this is a flawed trailer.
Poster the good the bad and the ugly
I'm very very very happy with the final result, and feel it's the perfect amount of over engineering for my level of OCD. It's possible to get 25mm bearings in the US for these trailers from a couple of sources. I added 6-foot angle crossmembers with eyebolts in the ends on both ends of the bed for tiedown points with the chocks moved almost to the side of the bed. I stripped off the plywood floor and sides and added the sides. People hate it. It was amazingly liberating. Spare Tire. Chris S 0. National Park Sites Crappy Axle and Hubs. I thought it was a neat idea. Two problems to solve. He had chocks set up on it to accomodate two sportbikes, one of which was a Honda Blackbird. Owned by a contractor it had seen some action i think, but I really had no idea how many miles were on it. I cut the top link in half and inserted it into the trailer tongue. That short trip got me thinking. Not sure if it was that the trailer now seemed overkill, or if it was the challenge of packing the camping gear in the Vanagon efficiently, but I decided to try and solve both problems at the same time..
