As the fair at the Kingdom begins, Alpha leads an attack on a caravan from the Hilltop going to the Kingdom. Michonne brings all the leaders from the communities together to apologize for Alexandria forgoing its relationships, to announce that Alexandria will give asylum to Lydia, and to establish a mutual protection pact knowing that Alpha will likely retaliate. To affirm the pact, Ezekiel has the communities sign Michonne's charter and then starts arranging for a small combined force to travel to the Hilltop to make sure it is secure from an attack by the Whisperers. As the fair continues, Alpha poses as one of the Alexandria fairgoers from the caravan and gathers information. Earlier that day, Daryl's small force leaves for the Hilltop and meets up with the Highwaymen en route. The Highwaymen point them to the group of Hilltop residents that were killed by Alpha. The group decides to split up to look for any survivors. That night, Daryl, Michonne, Carol, and Yumiko are attacked by walkers, and take them out one by one until the Whisperers surround them. Beta emerges from the trees and tells them to drop their weapons, saying, "You just had to give me the girl. No one else had to die.

Some quick differences: in the comics, the Fair is held in Alexandria, not the Kingdom. In the show, Alpha murders a cute Hilltop couple so she can scalp the woman and cosplay as her at the Fair. Once she makes it to Kingdom, Alpha checks out the booths, chats up Ezekiel, and eventually finds Lydia at the movie. She tries convincing her to come back with her but Lydia refuses. Feeling betrayed, Alpha disowns her and leaves. Alpha and her people ambush Daryl, Michonne, and Carol and warn them not to threaten her.

Unlike the victims in the books, who were abducted or otherwise lured away from a community fair before their murders, Tara, Enid, and the others are seen in flashback engaging in an ultimately futile last stand against an overwhelming number of Whisperers before their deaths. The Walking Dead issue sees Rick Grimes, accompanied by son Carl and recently rescued former Whisperer Lydia, stumble across the horrific display erected by Lydia's mother, Alpha. They're then joined by Michonne, Dante, and Andrea, who asks, "What do we do now? In the show, the above minor characters are either long dead Olivia, Ken, Carson, Erin , little-seen Amber , or uninvolved Josh, Larry. Rodney and Addy are also exclusive to the show, with the latter inspired in part by Anna, a teen who had a crush on Carl, Henry's comic book counterpart.

While maybe not as overtly severe as the season 7 premiere in which Negan Jeffrey Dean Morgan beat Abraham and Glenn to death with his baseball bat, it certainly beat that episode in terms of quantity — this episode saw ten protagonist characters murdered and their heads placed on spikes. And as they head home they encounter said border markings — ten spikes, each with the zombified head of a protagonist character on it. It turned out that Alpha and presumably other members of the Whisperers had infiltrated the trade fair and snatched these folks, with some others being added later when they made a rescue attempt.
