May be because we wanted to distinguish divisare from the web that is condemned to a sort of vertical communication, always with the newest architecture at the top of the page, as the "cover story," "the focus.
In the industrial zone of Dreispitz, where you still have to dodge reversing trucks and negotiate kerbless asphalt roads, a residential block rises up, as they do in such zones in prosperous Western cities like Basel. This one looks different from your usual luxury lifestyle apartments. It is a concrete tower, with the gridded upper half projecting over a solid stalk, part toadstool part Torre Velasca, also something like a medieval siege engine, its apparently regular geometry turning out to be scalene and dislocated. Its ascent to the sky is brooding as much as aspiring, its domestic dreams cloudy and complex. More unusually still, the stalk turns out to contain the archive of the local architects Herzog and de Meuron, who designed the building. It has climate-controlled vaults containing drawings and documents. A goods lift scented by its oak lining reaches warehouse-like floors where models and samples going back to the early s are arranged on wooden racks.

The Dreispitz, an urban site covering some fifty hectares, is privately owned by a single proprietor. Originally used as a goods warehouse and later as a customs depot, its development, governed by unconventional rules, has led to a fascinating hodgepodge of architectures and uses. The building consists of two stacked volumes, tapered towards the top. The distinctive shape ensures that the apartments themselves, and the neighboring buildings, have sufficient daylight. The facade of raw concrete is marked by the horizontal formwork of narrow wooden planks. Over the years, the rain running down the concrete will make the surface structure resemble the bark of a tree. Until now the archives were stored in different places, making it difficult to source, organize and study them. All of these holdings are now under one roof in the Helsinki Dreispitz premises, which meet contemporary conservatorial needs and logistical requirements. Specially designed cabinets and display cases ensure that all of the models can be seen and easily revisited. Making them, or parts of them, accessible for research and study is one of various future scenarios.

Text description provided by the architects. The Volkshaus Basel , originally the castle bailiwick, can be traced back to the 14th century. The location has always been a site of dense and varied use—a piece of the city within the city. A brewery with an adjoining restaurant was built on the premises in , with a concert and beer hall added in After the city of Basel took over the facilities in , the site became a hub of political, social, and cultural activities, which ultimately led to a shortage of space and competition in The winner, architect Henri Baur, built the new Volkshaus Basel, inaugurated in , integrating the existing concert hall and supplementing it with halls of varying sizes, offices, conference rooms, shops, restaurants, and accommodation for personnel.

We say that over and over again not out of modesty or to castigate ourselves but because we want to maintain our independence and because we are curious about new possibilities.

Retrieved 11 November Content that was destined, just like the oh-so-new architecture that had just preceded it a few hours earlier, to rapidly slide down, day after day, lower and lower, in a vertical plunge towards the scrapheap of page 2. This is an early example of an emerging type of institution, the archive of the great architect, which, because of the scale of production of such offices, now require substantial amounts of building in this case 2, square metres of the Toadstool Velasca, not counting a workshop space to house them. The plainness, going on banality, of form was a sort of non-form, which deflected attention to other properties: their surprising use of materials, unexpected inversions of weight and void, ambiguities of scale, their combinations of welcome and denial. Likewise Zaha Hadid Architects, who are due to take over and fill the current Design Museum building in London withHerzog and de Meuron are, of course, in the same group of Pritzkerised stars as Hadid and others superfluous to name.
