The volume manga has become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 55 million copies. The series has been adapted into stage plays, video games and a four-season anime with a continuation film series on the way. There has also been spinoff manga series and a radio drama. The main characters, Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama, immediately drew fans in from the very beginning. Their relationship begins rocky but develops over time once they join the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club. Despite their ups and downs, there is more than a hint of fated destiny between the two. Reality dawns on Hinata when he sees the players of the powerhouse school, Kitagawa Daichi, step onto the court with their star setter, Tobio Kageyama.

Though many popular sports anime do have main characters, it is not always easy to pick out who the actual star of the series is. In Kuroko no Basket , the name of the series is based on the character Kuroko, though he stands as one of the two main characters in the show along with Kagami. In Free! He is tall and naturally skilled in his abilities as a setter. In fact, Kageyama is so skilled that he often feels like he is leagues better than the rest of the team he is on. His attitude towards his own team becomes incredibly hostile as he gets angry at them for not being able to score the points he perfectly lines up for them. Kageyama feels like he is never in the wrong, and because of that, he ends up earning the title King of the Court for his awful and dictating behavior.

The episode premiered on November 1, Hinata expresses how he wants to improve so that he would be capable of competing by himself, but Kageyama replies that in doing so he would break the team apart. Hinata interprets him as being unsupportive of his wishes, and they argue to the point they ignore each other. The team worry about the situation and hope that the two would reconcile soon. The episode begins with Karasuno getting ready for a game against Nekoma and Ukai advising Hinata and Kageyama to do all they can in the game.
