Her name is Whitney Chewston , aka the Homophobic Dog , and while the memes featuring her may seem hateful at first, there's actually a lot more going on behind the meme than you might think. Here's an explanation. They then used the meme among friends as an inside joke, but by March , it got out to the web at large, where it started to spread and inspire new variations. The original "not too fond of gay people" meme became only one of many versions of the meme as people used new images of Whitney under further over-the-top homophobic captions. Some of them even suggest Whitney is gay herself. These memes, such as the "mama let's research" and "i have a confession" versions, have become just as popular as the ironic homophobic ones. The meme even got a response from the restaurant, which didn't seem aware of the meme's connotations, creating a viral moment that spread internet-wide as a dunk on the company. The homophobic dog's real name is Whitney Chewston, a pun on the name of the singer Whitney Houston. While anyone can use the meme in any way they wish, including homophobes, the homophobic dog meme is largely considered ironic. In fact, Whitney Chewston's owners, two gay men, see the meme as a critique of homophobes , claiming that members of the queer community have embraced it and made it their own.

TAMPA — A man accused of a hate crime in the shooting death of a gay man at a West Tampa dog park last month made his first appearance in court before a Hillsborough County judge Saturday morning after being charged with second-degree murder. The arrest of Gerald Declan Radford came more than a month after the shooting left John Walter Lay dead and his friends and family seeking justice. Radford, who appeared via video screen before Judge Darren Farfante, has claimed self-defense and retained counsel. Friends and family previously told the Tampa Bay Times that Lay had been harassed and threatened by Radford, who used homophobic slurs, for months. The judge Saturday said there was probable cause for the charges against Radford. He is being held without bond and a pretrial detention hearing has been set for Wednesday.
