By default, the sound sensor picks up sound in a 5-meter radius on the same floor, ignoring walls. This radius can be increased by clicking on the enlargement icon on the Sound Monitor in the van. The Tier III Sound Sensor has two additional modes which can be switched to by interacting default: left click on mouse with it while it is placed, or toggling default: right click on mouse directly while in hand. These modes can't be switched from the van.
