Yes, we replied, we were aware —as we would have been in Paris or indeed in San Bernardino, California. Truth to tell, the evil of terrorism makes itself known just about anywhere in the world these days. To stay at home and avoid the world is one response; we chose to go out and confront and learn, fully aware of risks and not behaving foolishly on the one hand, and on the other hand refusing to let terrorists win by keeping us cowered in our homes. My topic is simple: food. In the past we had both happily made excursions to the Egyptian Market, aka the Spice Market, in the Eminonu district on the waterfront below Sultanahmet, but this time we were disappointed. Shopkeepers were annoyingly aggressive and persistent in their demands to come in and buy. Still, we did come across an old man quietly selling leeches, which he extracted from a water-filled glass jug, one by one, for a medicinal practice that goes back to medieval times and is still traditional in Turkey.
