Yoda still stands as one of the most powerful characters in Star Wars , yet even he couldn't defeat Palpatine. After their battle in Revenge of the Sith , Yoda felt beaten and fled into exile on Dagobah, where he hid away for 19 years. However, despite his painful loss against Darth Sidious, hiding for nearly two decades can be viewed as a cowardly move. So, why did Yoda go into exile? With Palpatine's ascent to Galactic Emperor, and Order 66 purging the ranks of the Jedi Order , the situation seemed unrecoverable.

Conversation of this sort was particularly prevalent in the years leading up to the prequel trilogy, as the first three films alluded to tons of epic battles and moments which we, at that time, had yet to see. More interesting still were the fight scenes featuring Yoda, a powerful Jedi who was revered mostly through hearsay and was never actually shown in combat at any point during the original trilogy. Yoda may be physically gone following his departure in Return of the Jedi, but his presence is far from absent in the new movies. Updated April 10, , by Gabrielle Huston: With several television shows keeping the love for Star Wars alive, even after the end of the prequel trilogy, there are more characters than ever to pit against Yoda. After all, he can totally take 'em Mace Windu may seem like an out-of-left-field pick for a list of characters stronger than Yoda, but he was a Jedi council member of equal ranking to the little green Jedi of unknown origin. Revan was a gifted force-sensitive human male who rose to join the ranks of the Jedi Knights before falling to the Dark Side and helping to establish the Sith order. He fought in many timeline-altering battles and was nearly successful in his attempt on the life of the Sith Emperor. A relatively underappreciated character among those unfamiliar with the expanded universe, Revan may well have given Yoda a run for his money… or, more aptly, his credits. In a way, this could never be a fair fight because The Father and his family, collectively known as The Ones, are thought to be the progenitors of the Force and are widely considered to have had something to do with its origins. Yoda may be a disciplined and wise combatant, but he could never hope to defeat an entity possibly responsible for the creation of the Force. Vitiate, an extremely powerful Sith Lord who ruled much of the galaxy and controlled the Sith Empire for around years, was known by many names, and is sort of an enigmatic figure in Star Wars lore.

This erupted into an intense duel between these masters of the Force, a fight that Yoda ultimately lost and was forced to flee.

Did RotS Sidious really prove himself superior to Yoda? Or is our little green friend his match? I'd say the latter. Throughout this blog, I'm going outline the important facts of the duel using G-Canon and C-Canon sources as well as debunking common arguments against Yoda. I'm going to split this into two parts the first part will be exploring the circumstances of the lightsaber duel and the next part will cover the circumstances around the final lightning exchange and determine if Yoda was really overpowered. I'm all for getting straight to the point so with introductions out of the way here we go. This is important.

Just as Master Kenobi, your apprentice will destroy. I'm willing to grant them the disarming, because in the movie Sidious' lightsaber mysteriously disappears and I'm assuming Sidious didn't just throw it away. But the Sith Lord's powers were too strong. Either Darth Sidious kills Yoda. However, his mastery of such skills seem to have surpassed those of even Master Yoda. First Yoda already had Sidious on the run in his office, perfectly neutral ground. Mundi was notable for several reasons, the least of which being his notorious duels with the Dark Jedi Knight Asajj Ventress and the four-armed Jedi hunter General Grievous. There is a reason why Windu defeated him in saber combat despite being vastly weaker than Sidious in the Force. I showed pretty clearly how in none of the primary sources, even the SN did Sidious outright overpower Yoda's Force barrier - "The shadow released its power for an instant, long enough only to whirl away through the air and alight upon one of the delegation pods as it flew past, and the creature leaped to follow. Though she'd probably never pick a fight with him, being very serene and peaceful, the Daughter is the epitome of the power that Yoda wields. AEHoward33 , Jul 20, In biding his time and waiting for the right apprentice to come along, Yoda amended his mistakes from his previous lifetime and managed to set the galaxy back in order. If Yoda had let go of discipline, and instead lashed out with the force abilities that only the Sith possess, Palpatine wouldn't have stood a chance.

It should not have been a surprise. Environmental advantage - if it has any weight isn't an excuse for Sidious. But sidious got pushed back? Mundi was notable for several reasons, the least of which being his notorious duels with the Dark Jedi Knight Asajj Ventress and the four-armed Jedi hunter General Grievous. Powerful, they were, to tear down and destroy, but they could not build anything lasting. First, it's wrong to say they were stalemating in the office. He pushed back sidious with the explosion, and he got pushed back too. Anakin's fighting style is Djem-so, it's a very good style against someone like Dooku's elegant makashi style, since Djem-so relies on physical strength, and counter attack movements. Palpatine proved in that confrontation that, with his use of the dark side, he was able to best the Jedi Grand Master. Though Yoda is a tough combatant, the Emperor uses his Sith powers to release lightning bolts and hurl floating platforms at his foe. This is supported by the visual expression of Yoda first loosing but later regaining the advantage. And Yoda knows even he couldn't resist the temptation of the dark side once those dead Sith Lords bond to his soul. The energy bolts begin to arc back on the Emperor. Regardless if Yoda had an environmental advantage when he disarmed him, it remains indisputably canon Yoda was winning on the neutral ground regardless, hence the need for Sidious to retreat in the first place. Even so, Yoda saw the fight as a loss and took his leave.
