As such, she is uniquely equipped to comment on our recent First Mondays guest, acclaimed veteran animator James Baxter. Baxter presented to a sold-out crowd that had gathered from near and far in some cases, from hundreds of miles away! At the very end, he pressed "play" and a short, endearing cartoon followed. I have been to quite a few First Monday events within my years being a part of the Cinema department, but this one in particular was probably one of the best First Mondays I have yet experienced. James has animated characters on movies that I have watched since before I can remember, and who knew these films would have impacted me as much as they did! I have really loved 2D animating and understanding how much time and craft it takes to make something or someone move around through multiple drawings There is this sense of nostalgia and awe in being able to make characters come to life. To me animation is just magical. When Tony Bancroft told our animation class that James Baxter was going to be animating for us live , our class was very excited, but this night was more than I could have asked for as an animation student and artist myself. James asked the audience to pitch ideas of what he might animate. The audience agreed on the idea of a squirrel throwing an acorn grenade. Frame-by-frame, and drawing after drawing, it was so cool to see the process of someone so highly admired in the animation industry bring that squirrel to life. James started off with just scribbles of a form and then, suddenly, it was the cutest squirrel I had ever seen! The character was consistent in the drawings when he would flip back and forth through the frames. You could see the stretch of the squirrel's body when jumping and the "squash" in its face when the squirrel bites off the cap of the acorn. The poses were so clear and the message was easily communicated to us as the audience.

Those three are the titans of Disney animation. James Baxter might have the most interesting story of all. He started out as an animator in England thinking he had no chance of ever animating at Disney, became a supervising animator at Disney and worked on some of their most memorable characters, moved to DreamWorks Animation and eventually left DreamWorks and went independent. After animating various wildlife and insects in The Rescuers Down Under, Baxter had his biggest gig yet supervising the animation on Belle in Beauty and the Beast. That character was his greatest work. He was 23 when he worked on that movie, making him the youngest supervising animator at the time. He later left Disney to join DreamWorks Animation because he wanted to try something new and get a chance to work with some of the talented animators from Amblimation Fievel Goes West, Balto who formed DreamWorks when it was founded in His experience on Madagascar working on unappealing CG characters led to his decision to leave DreamWorks and start his own animation studio James Baxter Animation, which handled the hand-drawn animation in the movies Curious George, Enchanted and Kung Fu Panda. He later returned to DreamWorks to work on Monsters vs.

The animation process has always fascinated me and is my favorite medium for storytelling. Whether it is traditionally hand-drawn, CG, or stop-motion, the emotional exchange that happens between these characters who are technically a series of still images in sequential order and the viewing audience is pure magic. But as I am captivated by a memorable story, I also like to see and believe in the souls of the characters on screen. I admit that I am usually so engaged in the story that I am not overanalyzing the production, which I think is a success in great storytelling and animation, but sometimes I like to remind myself that each frame, typically 24 frames per second FPS for animation, is a uniquely created piece of art. Each animator creates an image that follows the previous image which will ultimately fill in 24 frames per second, 60 seconds per minute, and 60 minutes per hour.
