Kanakavalli saree

I distinctly remember this was my first time I laid eyes on a Kanjeevaram saree, as commonly known to a Mumbaikar, or a Kancheevaram as traditionally called by a south Indian, kanakavalli saree.

South Indian weddings and Kanchipuram aka Kanchivaram silk sarees are inseparable! While the wedding ceremony brings out the finest traditional aspect of an Indian woman, it is the wedding reception, which brings the other contemporary half. While it was initially fancy sarees with Zardosi, Kundan, embroidery work, there is also a huge influx of Anarkalis, Lehengas and even a western gown, for the girl who is willing to take her modern frame of mind to the next step. As promised in my first blog on wedding fashion, I shall try to keep this blog with less verbal content as possible and include more pictures to get a peek into the riot of colors! And every time I go through these pictures, they make me smile too! April 14, December 14, thesurrealsagittarian.

As a South Indian, my first saree was a Kanchivaram which I wore for my class 10th farewell! If you have been raised in India, chances are likely that as a young woman, your first sarees will all be silks! Pair your grand Kanchivaram saree with a handwoven black ikat blouse! Why should you buy a separate dress for Dandiya when you can spice things up a bit with your own Kanchivaram?! This is how I used to wear my silks till a while ago, with neatly pinned pleats and matching blouse! So if I pinned my shoulder pleats now, this is how I look! These days I see a lot of people shy away from wearing matching blouses! But matching blouses do give a formal, sophisticated and matured look! And pinning the pleats is not a bad thing at all especially if you have to run around wearing the saree like I used to during my CEG days the perfectly pinned pleats never let me down! I am just wearing my signature earrings with no necklace or bangles! With a contrast blouse you can let the Kanchivaram and the earrings do the talking!
