For the manufacturers involved, winning on a Sunday really did sell bikes on a Monday, leading to a boom in sales of sportsbikes — and superbikes in particular, kawasaki 1996.

A far, far cheaper way of cruising than buying into the Harley dream. Reliable too. The VNs are positively vast so, if road presence is important to you, they could be your thing. Lots of gutsy, low down performance with smooth touring speeds at the top end mean relaxed, joyful and easy riding. Soft, plush… Like sitting in a pile of cushions. A rubber-mounted, v-twin, oozing with thunderous torque, it hauls this heavyweight around with a seeming lack of effort. At higher speeds it copes well, cruising happily at around 80mph.

Nobuhiro Maeda. It has more top-end about 5 horsepower's worth and revs two to two-and-a-half thousand further into the wide blue yonder. Bore x Stroke. The FZR, always in the immediate background ready to shine forth, is more single-minded. The Zephyr's cc motor is almost identical to the one fitted to the fine, up and still standing GT for longer than I care-to remember. Shinkichi Kikuchi. Wet Multiplate. Fault or no fault, it was a good way behind both the Honda and the Kawasaki on peak power, which isn't totally amazing when you see that the Yamaha runs 32mm carburettors while the others are up to 34 and 36mm and even the Suzuki has 33s. Strong, reliable and with pretty funky handling for a cruiser, the Kawasaki VN makes for a useful bike as well as a perfect pose-machine. Not bad value but a bugger to keep clean. Ground clearance is minimal though.

Even if it wasn't quite as quick as the Honda around the circuit, the FZR was certainly easier to use. For this year there are new graphics, a single headlight fairing, radial tyres Dunlops on this one and first and second gearbox ratios are different. In fact, compared with today's sports bikes the Zephyr's squashy seat is bloody comfortable. Carb icing: Symptoms can range from stuttering to, in extreme cases, a stuck throttle.
