It has been announced that five hockey teams from the Keystone Junior Hockey League will be leaving to join their own league, keystone junior hockey. The league plays under the sanction of Hockey Manitoba , in affiliation with Hockey Canada. The league started in the seventies as the Manitoba Junior B Hockey League , changing to the current name in Until the season, the KJHL consisted of 10 teams, with each playing 34 games during the regular season. All teams make the playoffs. Teams finishing 4th and 5th in each division, playoff in a best-of-three survivor series to determine playoff seeding. Winners then move on to the regular playoff format, which are an elimination tournament consisting of 3 rounds. Best-of-five division semifinals, best-of-seven division final, and league championship, with the winner becoming the KJHL, Manitoba, and Baldy Northcott Trophy champions. After the season, the five southern teams in the league withdrew to form the Capital Region Junior Hockey League citing travel distance in light of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash a few months earlier and the expense of travel to the remote northern teams, which was refuted by the remaining members who stated they had been subsidizing travel for the southern teams. Due to the animosity over the break-up of the league there was no Baldy Northcott Trophy competition for the season and the KJHL had two of its teams compete in the Keystone Cup , which had already been reformatted when teams from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan opted out of the tournament, against two members of the Lakehead Junior Hockey League. The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation youth hockey programme had grown to the point where they felt it was time to add a junior B team to its' offerings. A judge has denied an injunction against the split of a Manitoba junior hockey league that some allege deliberately excluded Indigenous teams. Justice Herbert Rempel said he could not rule on what motivated the split or whether racism played a role, but he recognized that junior hockey is important in First Nations communities as it provides entertainment and inspiration for youth. Jamie Kagan, a lawyer representing the KJHL and the First Nations, had argued that all the "white teams quietly got together and removed themselves, leaving behind the First Nations teams. A complaint was filed to Hockey Manitoba and an internal tribunal ruled that the new league had breached the organization's constitution when it did not give proper notice to the KJHL. Keystone junior hockey
This is the Keystone Junior Hockey League season. This is the league's 48th season overall and 18th under its' present name. On November 20th the league would announce a push back of the start of the league season to January. On January 26th Hockey Manitoba released a statement indicating that restrictions would continue until February 12th and possibly longer until the conditions had improved with the province lowering the alert level for 10 days. On February 9th, the province eased some restrictions allowing outdoor practices and games but restrictions indoors allowing for one on one instruction only with no game play allowed. This would take effect on February 12th [3]. On March 3rd, the league cancelled the playing season.
