If you have a long layover in Kuala Lumpur, consider yourself lucky! Recently I decided to stay in Kuala Lumpur for five days to check it out, since I normally just layover there and never leave the airport. Trust me, adjust your flight, and leave the airport! The location is also prime, with many things within walking distance! Download the Grab app before you arrive and use it to get to and from the airport for the best price.

Kuala Lumpur is a major hub for traveling to various destinations across Asia, but what happens if you end up with a long layover? This has happened to me when connecting onwards to Indonesia and KLIA is not exactly the most luxurious or exciting airport to kill more than a couple of hours in. During peak hours the train leaves every 15 minutes starting on the hour and every 20 minutes off peak. My favourite thing to do in KL is to eat so I tend to plan my layovers around eating. For more detail on what to eat in KL, you can check out my post here. Any of the chains with various mall locations will be easily reachable from the airport. The obvious layover choice is to visit the Petronas Twin Towers. You can buy tickets here. I recommend trying to time your visit with sunset for the best views and a chance to see the view during both the day and night. The towers are closed every Monday but open other days 9am — 9pm except on Fridays when they close between 1pm and pm. Like Like. Pingback: Three nights in Bangkok Think on paper. Search for:. Kuala Lumpur is one of those cities a lot of flights tend to go through. If you find yourself with a layover at KLIA and need to kill a few hours or survive an overnight stop, here are my tips on things to do at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Just keep in mind there are two sections to the airport KLIA and klia2, with klia2 catering to low-cost airlines. Planning your trip? The airport is attached to a mall, called Gateway klia2. There are quite a few good shops, including jewellery, clothing, shoes and electronics stores. But, if you have 5 hours layover and want to stretch your legs, it could be worth it for you.
Located at the crossroads between the far east and south Asia, and situated conveniently between the South East Asian hotspots of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and Oceania, Kuala Lumpur is on the route of many inter-continental journeys. And while I obviously love overlanding, sometimes money or time constraints have this pesky habit of getting in the way and these inter-continental journeys are essential to do by air. But something that I always try and do if I have to fly is make the most of any layover countries. But rather than fly in and fly out, I thought it would be kinda rad to see what this country had to offer for a week. After this layover week, I really really want to spend some time backpacking Malaysia — I only saw Kuala Lumpur and Penang and could easily return to them both! I spent three days of my week in Kuala Lumpur, and really loved the city.

This was not my first visit to Kuala Lumpur KL. Hell no, I was going to go exploring. When my partner and I decided to visit Vietnam for 2 weeks our flight options from Melbourne were a stopover in Singapore or a stopover in Kuala Lumpur. Ultimately we let the price do the deciding and ended up on an Air Asia X flight with an overnight in KL on the way to Vietnam and similar on the way back. On the way to Vietnam, we got a luxurious 4 pm arrival into KL, but a horrid 6 am departure time the next day. So we had around 12 hours, excluding all the time we would need to spend getting in and out of the airport. Out came my phone notes and I wrote down my favourite things to do in KL to introduce my partner to the best parts in just a few hours.
