Founded in the late 15th century on site of an ancient Greek colony, the eastern port city was well-known as a center of intellectualism and independent thinking, cosmopolitanism, art and culture. In , during the so-called Arab Spring , Derna locals, along with people in the neighboring coastal city of Benghazi, about kilometers miles to the west, were some of the first to demonstrate against the country's year dictatorship.
