Liverpool Lime Street is a terminus railway station and the main station serving the city centre of Liverpool. Opened in August , it is the oldest still-operating grand terminus mainline station in the world. Having realised that their existing Crown Street railway station was too far away from the city centre, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway commenced construction of the more central Lime Street station in October Proving to be very popular with train commuters, expansion of the station had become necessary within six years of its opening. Designed by William Baker and Francis Stevenson, the train shed was the largest such structure in the world upon completion, featuring a span of feet 61 m , as well as the first to make extensive use of iron. During , a second parallel southern train shed was completed. Following the nationalisation of the railways in , Lime Street station was the subject of various upgrades and alterations, including new signalling systems in and around the station, a redeveloped concourse, and new retail and office spaces. During the s, a new urban rail network known as Merseyrail was developed, while all other long-distance terminal stations in Liverpool were closed, resulting in such services being centralised at Lime Street for the whole city.

Many of the city's main streets have been transformed in recent years, with some sections of the city unrecognisable from just a few years ago. Lime Street station has just re-opened following a huge refurbishment, but even before the new platforms were installed this summer, the change from the early 's is remarkable. With this in mind we decided to dive into our photo archives and discover just how much the cityscape has changed. Before the front of Lime Street station featured an arcade of shops and an office tower block. In July the shops and tower block were demolished and work began on creating the new station frontage and redeveloping the area. As the pictures from the early 's show the station front looked completely different, with shops blocking the entrance to the historic station. Since the redevelopment the station frontage has remained relatively unchanged in eight years - but inside the station has been overhauled - after being closed for two months. The newly refurbished station features rebuilt platforms and an additional platform added - helping to increase the capacity of the station by up to three trains an hour.
