Cats and dogs have a digitigrade stance. That is that they perpetually walk on their toes, as opposed to their toe nails like a deer or flat-footed like a bear. This puts their heel off the ground. People often mistake the heel for a backwards facing knee but a close examination of the anatomy shows that they have a knee that points much the same way as ours. The knee is easy to miss when looking at the animal because the knee is about at the same level as the belly. The knees of some digitigrade animals such as dogs or cheetahs are easier to see because they are distinctly below the level of the belly. On the front limb, the wrist is low on the leg and slightly angled forward. Most of the limb that you see below the belly is a long forearm radius and ulna. In addition to the six muscles you have seen in the bear and the deer, there are two more ones that make prominent bulges on the bodies of cats. Cats use their forearms dynamically and have more developed back and shoulder latissimus dorsi and deltoid muscles than you see in other quadrupeds.

This step by step tutorial shows how to draw the full body of a lion from the side view with illustrated drawing examples for each step. If you are going to be following the tutorial using pencil and paper be sure to draw light lines that you can easily erase for at least the first five steps of the tutorial. At this stage leave out any of the smaller details. The goal of this and the following two steps is to construct a rough overall shape of the lion and to compare the proportions of its major body parts to one another. In this step the main shape of the body should very loosely resemble a bean and the snout can slightly resemble a bucket. Now draw the simplified shapes of the front and back leg as shown in the above example. You can do this by using mainly straight lines with a few basic curves around the joints and two larger curves to indicate the upper front areas of the paws. Draw the ears going through the middle of the top curve of the head angled slightly towards the snout. Add the tail in a wave like shape thicker towards the base and thinner towards the tip. Lions also have a brush like clump of hair at the end of their tails and for this stage you can simply outline the general shape of that brush with tho curved lines.
