He has a bit of a rivalry with Neteyam, jealous of the love, admiration and acceptance he receives, and wishes he could be seen positively like him; when Aonung said "I must be asking the wrong brother", this was all it took for Lo'ak to accept going outside the reef because he wanted to be seen as being the cooler brother. Tsireya sympathized with Lo'ak when he felt all alone, trying to convince him that he truly deserved a place among her clan. Due to Lo'ak's reckless and rebellious behavior, Neteyam often takes the blame for the mess his younger brother's causes. When Neteyam is buried, Lo'ak can be seen reaching out towards his deceased brother. The akula spots and attacks Lo'ak who desperately faces the creature, armed with only a knife. Neytiri shows her concern for him when Jake tells Lo'ak that he had embarrassed his family, as she looks at Lo'ak with sadness.
