Neighbors and friends Dolores Boden and Tippy Hawkins had been playing the par three course for years, when Tippy, whose short game was frustrating, suggested to Dolores that they would probably make the same score playing the front nine of the regular course and would get to use their woods. We were so excited and asked if we could form a nine hole group too. We were told that we could but would have to follow the 18 hole players there was only the one golf course then. Today this thriving organization welcomes women, 18 years and older, from all walks of life, all ages and all skill levels — from career women, to working moms, to retirees. These women all have one thing in common — a love of golf. Over members strong, our league plays on Tuesday mornings during our season which runs from April through October. The LWGA offers members weekly hole golf tournaments including assigned tee times as well as shotgun starts. If you are unable to play on Tuesdays, you can still participate in some weekly tournaments as long as you can play with a LWGA member from Thursday through Monday and enter your scores. All members are required to establish a handicap. New members will be assigned a mentor — a league member who is familiar with the ins and outs of league play — we want to make this fun for you! Our weekly tournaments are themed with some fun twists to the rules making for a fun round with golfers of all levels. The highlight to the season is our Member-Guest Tournament. We also enable a number of social events that allow our members to get to know their fellow members off the course. We have regularly scheduled luncheons as well as other fun events, such as a lobster fest on the beach. Click here for our LWGA tournament descriptions and schedule. Funding has also consistently gone toward a summer scholars program for medical students researching cancer treatments, and this year part of the money raised will support the addition of a palliative care case manager for the Institute's patients.
