Brawl is a Commander variant that uses only Standard -legal cards, [1] in addition to Arcane Signet and Command Tower. Since its ruleset is derived from Commander, the Comprehensive Rules consider Brawl to be an option of how to play Commander. However, several significant rules differences and the vast difference in the size of the card pool makes them quite different in practice. Brawl is very similar to Commander, with the following exceptions: [3]. Four special preconstructed Brawl Decks were designed for Throne of Eldraine. Each deck has seven of them — four cards unique to that deck, one card shared with one other Brawl Deck, and two cards shared with each other Brawl Deck. These cards are all legal in Standard, Brawl, and all other formats that allow the latest sets.

Brawl is a format that almost exclusively lives on Magic Arena at this point. The format is a Standard-legal derivative of Commander with card singleton decks built around a legendary creature or planeswalker. Since its introduction, the format struggled to get going at local game stores. Coming off set rotation, Brawl has a small card pool but there are still plenty of options for creative deck builders to have fun in the format. The format is benefitting from Wizards of the Coast printing more legendary creature cards than ever, giving players a variety of directions and archetypes to explore. The games are swingy and center around generating value through redundancy within the list. For those looking to use all of their favorite Rare and Mythic Rare cards in one deck, look to Jodah, the Unifier as an excellent catch-all general in Brawl. The five-color Human synergizes with legendary spells.
