Spellcrafting , or spellmaking , is the art of creating unique spells , usually through combining multiple existing spells. A custom spell can have more than one effect such as frost and fire damage. The magnitude of the effect is proportional to the magicka required to cast the spell. Multiple effects have compounding magicka requirements. Spellmakers of the Mages Guild provide services of spellmaking. Spellmaking can be performed with an Altar of Spellmaking. Effects are only available if you already have a spell including that effect and the ability to cast that spell both sufficient rank and sufficient magicka.

So I've played through Oblivion a few times, but I've never spent much time with the magic casting side of things and therefore don't have much experience creating spells. I'm playing a Mage type character at the moment and was hoping to get advice on powerful spells that I could create for general usage? By general usage, I mean spells that don't take a ridiculous amount of magicka to cast and that I can use on most enemies. My character is only level 3, if that makes any difference. Comix 14 years ago 2. A good place to start is to pick your favorite elemental spell fire, frost, lightning and when you get to the Arcane University make a custom spell based on that. Let's say you chose Fire. Just make a simple "Fire Damage on Touch 20 pts for 3 seconds" or something along those lines. Once you make that spell you're going to want to make a Weakness spell to go along with it. In combat you're going to want to cast the Weakness spell and then the actual damage spell itself for maximum effect.
You can make all Fortify Skill spells if you have any Fortify Skill.

But please take into consideration that there is no room to list every useful spell, there are countless combinations of spells and many of them are useful.

The magic system in Oblivion is much more robust and versatile spell-wise than the one featured in Skyrim. Oblivion offers you more spells to learn and even the option to make your own spells to cast. Mages definitely have a lot to choose from and it can be overwhelming at first to figure out where to begin. Oblivion offers a wide variety of spells from restoring attributes to the ability to breathe underwater. You have to prioritize which ones to learn and which ones to improve upon for better stats against foes. Dungeon crawling can be a dangerous and deadly business, so being able to see your opponents well in advance is certain to give you an advantage. The Detect Life Spell works for 60 seconds outlining all visible and invisible creatures and people around you. Especially useful if you are not using magic in combat percent of the time, this spell drains anywhere from points of health for ten seconds depending on the level learned. This spell is powerful and could be used by mages and non-mages alike to kill foes. It gets the job done quickly by immediately draining health.

If your skill level is not high enough to cast your custom spell, you will be given an error message and returned to the spellmaking window. However, this system becomes a bit overwhelming at first glance. In fact, the area effect can be further decreased to save magicka. It's a long road to make your own spells, but it's totally worth it. Cast it right before fast traveling. Instead of 60 Fire damage, add 20 Fire, 20 Frost, and 20 Lightning. Therefore it is prudent to pay attention to the message at the bottom of the spellmaking window that tells you what skill is needed to cast the spell: the message provides the correct information.
