The reproductive endocrinology and behavior of Vancouver Island marmot Marmota vancouverensis. The Vancouver Island marmot Marmota vancouverensis; VIM is one of North America's most endangered species with fewer than individuals remaining in the wild. A captive breeding program was established across four facilities in Canada as an insurance population and source of animals for reintroduction to the wild. The purpose of this study was to gather information about the basic reproductive biology and behavior of this species, which is essential to improve captive breeding programs. Enzyme immunoassays were validated for quantifying fecal testosterone metabolite concentrations for males, and fecal estrogen and progesterone metabolite concentrations for females. Results indicated that fecal progesterone metabolite concentrations can be used to monitor ovulation and pregnancy. Breeding behaviors correlated strongly with changes in reproductive endocrine profiles. A high frequency of play behavior or "wrestling" was observed in conjunction with breeding activity before an elevation in progesterone metabolite concentrations. Impending parturition was associated with increased aggression and exclusion of the male from the maternal nestbox as well as an increase in nesting activity. Observational data combined with hormonal analysis suggest that female VIMs are induced ovulators and that multiple breeding attempts may be required for ovulation and conception. Gestation appears to be approximately 34 days from peak breeding activity 32 days from estimated ovulation. Fecal testosterone concentrations suggest that testicular activity is seasonal with the reproductive activity occurring immediately posthibernation. Montague Island marmot : a conservation assessment. The hoary marmot , from Montague Island , south-central Alaska, was classified as a distinct subspecies based on smaller size and skull characteristics relative to other island and mainland populations. The taxonomic validity of the Montague Island marmot Marmota caligata sheldoni is questionable, as conclusions were based on the analysis of no

Its dependence on palmitoyl-CoA suggests that a divalent cation might play a role in enzyme activation, marmota graciosa. Higher risk of gastrointestinal parasite infection at lower elevation suggests possible constraints in the distributional niche of Alpine marmots.

Marmots are large ground squirrels in the genus Marmota , with 15 species living in Asia, Europe, and North America. These herbivores are active during the summer, when they can often be found in groups, but are not seen during the winter, when they hibernate underground. They are the heaviest members of the squirrel family. Marmots are large rodents with characteristically short but robust legs, enlarged claws which are well adapted to digging, stout bodies, and large heads and incisors to quickly process a variety of vegetation.

Sand layers interbedded within peat and mud deposits occur at widely separated sites on Vancouver Island. Discharge, water temperature, and selected meteorological data for Vancouver Lake, Vancouver , Washington, water years Observed VO2 was lower than the value predicted from intraspecific or interspecific Bm:M regressions. The high hepatic diacylglycerol acyltransferase activity during hibernation suggests that the metabolism of very low density lipoprotein may be important in the movement of adipose fatty acids to brown adipose tissue and muscle during the rewarming that occurs periodically during hibernation. In marmots Marmota flaviventris , reducing both dietary EFAs alters hibernation patterns by causing an increase in energy expenditure, but hibernation still occurs. We observed partial temporal segregation between species without significant seasonal variation. Oelbaum , Tiago S. Europe wildlife, funny image, detail of Marmot. The way that plants and animals respond to climate change varies widely among species, but the biological features underlying their actual response remains largely unknown. We analyzed diet composition in terms of taxonomy of the insect prey, and the prey characteristics. An exponential increase in open-loop gain OLG occurred with decreases in temperature; it is concluded that this response can be explained by recruitment of cold-sensitive neurons brought about by low-temperature inactivation of inhibitory neurons. Items Per Page. When concentrations become lower than certain threshold, hypoxia leads to a major change in the ecosystem and the affected areas are called 'dead zones'. The contaminants detected in the groundwater in the area surrounding the piles include cyanide, fluoride, and trichloroethenemore ยป TCE.

These findings suggest that researchers ought to think broadly when considering the sources of information available to animals in their natural environment. Imagen divertida, detalle de Marmot. This study provides evidence that multiple extrinsic factors play an important role in shaping the daily and monthly activity patterns of both skunks and, of course, affect their temporal niche partitioning, possibly promoting coexistence in a seasonal tropical environment. Demography of botfly Cuterebra fontinella parasitism in white-footed mice Peromyscus leucopus in Kansas. While we know that intra-uterine position and litter sex ratio influence anogenital distance, there are other, heretofore unstudied, factors that could influence anogenital distance, including maternal effects. Success concept. Seljalandsfoss waterfall in Iceland. Most bird species are expected to respond negatively to urbanization because of increased patch isolation, increased predation pressure, and negative edge Despite conservation and habitat management implications, the effects of land-use change on the trophic relationships between nocturnal arthropod predators and their prey have seldom been described. Femurs and tibias were collected from marmots during hibernation and in the summer following hibernation. The energetics of yellow-bellied marmots Marmota flaviventris , large hibernating ground squirrels were investigated. Different animals were likely colonized by the same resistant strain of E. Torpidity results in average energy savings during winter of Results of these analyses depicted a wide array of phylogenetic relationships among taxa; with substantial nodal support recovered in both the ML and PARS analyses at some mid-level and terminal positions.
