The Mate Controller is a tool that lets you specify multiple positions for mates within an assembly and save these mates without the need for configurations.

I am working on an assembly in SolidWorks , wherein, I am wanting to add a sequence to the movement of a few components. Basically, I have a telescopic tower that rests horizontal over a cabinet and can be erected 90 degrees to extend to its total vertical height. I need the folded telescopic tower to be rotated 90 degrees for which I have a LimitAngle mate in place. I want this mate to freeze once the tower is rotated 90 degrees, so that it stays in that position when I extend out its telescopic arms. I have been unable to achieve this. Please advise how I can constraint certain mates or add a sequence to the mates, so the degree of freedom of a specific component can be controlled. Without any constraints or a sequence applied, I am running into the problem of having multiple Mates execute at the same time.

You save positions in time and use them to make professional looking animations. In order to use Mate Controller, the assembly must have these types of mates:. This Tiger I tank has various types of supported mates in it, so it will serve as an example. The symbol mimics a robot arm, which is a perfect example for mate controller. The menu has three sections: Mates, Mates Positions and Animation. At first, the only active section is Mates and the others are grayed out. Click on the only button available. You may use the arrow keys to change the order of your mates in the first section. On the second section, you have seven buttons, two of which are grayed out:. Now, all of the listed mates each have a variable value, a bar to adjust their value by dragging and a lock button. Position 1 is now activated by default. Whatever change you apply to any or all of the mates by dragging their bars , will be assigned to Position 1.

Using the SolidWorks Mate Controller, and the new functionality in Composer , I am able to create quick and easy animations for my downstream technical publications. As I assemble my design, I continue to work with the mates I know and understand. You can then save and recall saved positions and mate values, and then create animations based on those saved positions. The steps in using the Mate Controller are very simple. I have included a couple of examples in the images below.

If not in the assembly, constraining the mates to operate in a sequence in the SolidWorks Composer would also help, so I can create an animation to demonstrate the functions of the model as I desire, but I haven't had any luck with that either. I'm reasonably certain that the only way you can have it locked in place in one situation, but not in another one, would be to have multiple configurations of the Assembly, with various mates suppress.

Article by Vicky Guignard updated September 24, There are different ways to get this done, either by creating an animation or configurations representing different positions of components. Using the controller you can specify positions of your assembly components using mate values and degrees of freedom without having to use configurations for each position.

You can specify sets of mate values to define various component positions. Ken LaVictor Sr. For Mate Controller, enter the negative value in the LimitAngle dimension field. Standard Mates by Entity.
