MO2 was initially started by Tannin, the creator of the original Mod Organizer, to take care of bit games such as Fallout 4. It is now actively maintained by a team of developers, from all backgrounds, and is now able to do much more than Tannin ever envisioned. The installer version is usually preferred for ease of installation. The installer can still be used to create a portable installation of MO2. Starting out with MO2 can be a bit intimidating. Several things about the tool may be unintuitive. There are some hidden features that affect how you mod your games. I waited many years to finally play MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, and it makes me sad how quickly I've moved on from it. It came out late last year, was fun for a bit but didn't make a lasting impression the way open-world sandbox games of that nature often do. The procedurally-generated missions were just a little too boring, and I wish there were more options for deep mech customization. But now that MW5 has mod support, someone's gone and tried to fix both of those issues. It's called MW5 Mercs Reloaded , and though its only in beta and still a long way from completion, the amount of big changes it makes to the base game is impressive. The biggest adjustment is a fully unlocked mechlab that offers an enormous amount of new ways to tweak and tailor your mech. Instead of just fussing over weapon systems, heat syncs, and armor, Reloaded adds new customization features for engine upgrades, five new types of armor, gyros, engine cooling, sensors, arm and leg enhancement slots, and even deeper structural changes. To compensate for all these new options, mechs have been overhauled to have more available hardpoints, which are what you attach modules like rocket launchers to. For mech theorycrafters, Reloaded sounds like a dream come true.

Mods are a big draw for PC gamers. Steam makes it easy to install and manage mods, and now that same ease-of-use is coming to the Epic Games Store. MechWarrior 5 has a vibrant and active mod community over on Nexus Mods, but those mods required users to have some rudimentary knowledge of game files in order to know where to place those mods. This might just be a quirk of MechWarrior 5 and not something to expect when other Epic games get mod support. There are two mods that are absolute must-haves right now since they fix known bugs that the developer just hasn't gotten around to fixing yet. Without it, a memory leak can cause performance degradation and serious frame rate loss. This is a known bug that Piranha Games intends to fix with an upcoming update, but we don't know when that update will be, so use this for now. The other mod is the Enemy Mech Availability Date Fix , which allows most of MechWarrior 5's mechs to actually appear in-game and not just in the quick-play menu. This is also a known bug that will also be fixed later on. Both allow you to customize your HUD's color and add an advanced zoom function that really lets you line up your sniper shots.
