There's no attempt to make it seem that Walter can throw his voice; on the contrary, the camera tends to focus on Gibson's lips flapping as he brandishes the puppet he's dubbed the Beaver. Still, Kyle Killen's script elaborates on the ventriloquism theme with a subplot involving Walter's eldest son, Porter Anton Yelchin : Busy as a beaver furnishing term papers to order, this Ivy League-bound high-school senior is hired by the school's smartest girl Jennifer Lawrence to ghostwrite her valedictorian address. Speaking through, even as he hides behind, his furry friend, Walter returns home. His younger son is delighted; his wife gets with the program once the Beaver explains that he's been prescribed by a shrink. I concede it is possible that a man in depression might be able to heal himself by projecting his personality into a hand puppet. I am not sure it is possible, or even advisable, to make a serious movie about that. We go through the movie with Mel Gibson wearing a toothy beaver on his left hand, and that creates a whole lot of disbelief for us to suspend. Very peculiar, indeed Needless to say, The Beaver was a box-office flop. Mel Gibson has the capacity to express himself exceedingly well through his expressive eyes and although age has done its thing with his face he still manages to live up to the character he portrays in the movie. A series of incidents leads to him taking on a new persona in which he speaks through a beaver hand puppet. Anyone with some common sense would think that this setup is a joke, wouldn't he? That could've been a real good description of the state he, and the depressed people in general, are usually in. The film is definitely dark and at times a touch of humour but I wouldn't even classify it as a black comedy because there really is nothing funny about the film. In general this is not the usual style of film I would watch but I really must say I was most pleasantly surprised at how engaging it was. He gets emotionally attached to Norah, feeling that she is repressing her desire to express herself regarding her brother's death, but his father's actions with the beaver puppet embarrass him. Gibson gives Walter's manic jag suggestive verisimilitude. Is The Beaver an allegory on acting? Brian" on a wall as an attempt to coax Norah to express her feelings about her brother, she is furious, and they are both arrested. And then the movie is over. It's likely that Gibson speaking mostly with a Cockney accent saw a potentially marvelous actor's turn in the role of Walter Black; unfortunately, the character isn't nurtured along with any shading, and Gibson is all on one annoying note.
