Mephisto is an extra-dimensional Demon who rules a fiery pocket dimension that he calls "Hell" or "Hades" although it is neither the Hell of the Christian religion nor the Hades ruled by Pluto , the Olympian god of the dead. Mephisto resembles the traditional visual conception of the devil. It is not known whether this is Mephisto's true appearance, or one that he has adopted in order to resemble the devil. He also allows himself to be called names that human beings give to their conceptions of devils, such as Mephisto, a shortened form of Mephistopheles , the name given to the devil in the Faust legends [6] and of a possible fallen angel. Indeed, Mephisto has allowed people to believe him to be Satan himself, however, Mephisto is not Lucifer. Marvel Comics' mischievous demon lord, Mephisto , has his dark tendrils stretching everywhere, even as far as the DC Universe. Mephisto has assembled an army of alternate versions of himself throughout the Multiverse, and two of these look exactly like a pair of famous DC Comics villains. Mephisto is the most dangerous member of a race of extradimensional creatures known as "Demons," whose origins are lost in time. Mephisto lords over a pocket dimension he calls Hell, where he traps the souls of mortals who submit their will to his by agreeing to pacts or deals. For this reason, over the course of the ages Mephisto has tempted mortals, appearing under many guises, mostly modeled to resemble human depictions of the Devil to reinforce their belief in one single being of absolute evil. As a creature of lies and deceit, Mephisto is constantly scheming to gain more power, which has led him to antagonize many heroes and villains including Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, Doom who has a personal, bitter feud with him , and most recently the Avengers. Mephisto has set his sight on conquering all Earths in the Multiverse. He realizes that to stop the heroes from constantly foiling his plans he has to cull the "Heroic Age" in its cradle by killing the first group of defenders of the planet, the Prehistoric Avengers, in every reality. To do that, he has enlisted the help of Doom Supreme and his Multiversal Masters of Evil , but Mephisto has plans of his own. He has been assembling his own group, the Council of Reds, a gathering of all the alternate versions of Mephisto from throughout the Multiverse. This hypothesis is not as far-fetched as it seems. DC has implied in the past that Mister Mxyzptlk is actually also Marvel's Impossible Man , a character with very similar behavior and powers who switches forms between worlds. While this is mostly used as a fourth-wall-breaking joke between the two companies, they still agree that Mister Mxyzptlk exists in both worlds, so there is nothing stopping him from being a ruse by Mephisto.

Mephisto's name has been thrown around so much in that to even suggest he's hanging around in the MCU at this stage is only done so with heavy sarcasm. And yet, every time there's the slightest hint the character could be a part of the madness in Phase 4 of the MCU, some can't help but swarm all over it. What's the big deal, and why should we care about Mephisto? Well, many people I'm assuming already know, but for those who don't, that's exactly why you're here. Here's what Mephisto is about for anyone out of the loop, and why every time there's some theory he's in the MCU, folks lose their collective minds at the suggestion. To get all misconceptions out of the way right now, Mephisto is not Satan, Lucifer or the ruler of Hell. It's more appropriate to say that he's the ruler of a dimension he's called Hell, and it and his own form are created which he can shape however he pleases to represent that hell portrayed in Christianity. In reality, Hades actually exists in the Marvel Universe and is ruled by Pluto, and Mephisto's hell is something different. Granted, few trapped in his dimension would argue the difference, as it's not at all pleasant.
