Mycobacterial infectious diseases, including tuberculosis TB , severely threaten global public health. Nonreplicating Mycobacterium tuberculosis Mtb is extremely difficult to eradicate using current TB drugs that primarily act on replicating cells. Novel TB drugs acting on unconventional targets are needed to combat TB efficiently. Although membrane-disrupting antimicrobial peptides and their synthetic mimics exhibit the potential to kill persisters, the lack of microbe selectivity, especially toward mycobacteria, has been a concern. Here, we report that the recently developed poly guanylurea -piperazine PGU-P shows fast and selective mycobactericidal effects. Using a nonpathogenic model organism, Mycobacterium smegmatis Msm , we have found that the mycobactericidal effects of PGU-P are correlated to the disruption of the mycobacterial membrane potential and bioenergetics. Accordingly, PGU-P also potentiates bedaquiline, an oxidative phosphorylation-targeting TB drug disturbing mycobacterial bioenergetics. Our results support that PGU-P is a novel class of antimycobacterial biomaterial, and the unique structural feature can contribute to developing novel antimycobacterial drugs. It has always been my goal to care for others, and I have found that psychiatry allows me to truly understand another person, thus allowing me to provide a holistic level of care. Since then, I have had the unique experiences of working at a psychiatric emergency department, an inpatient psychiatric hospital setting, and an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program. This has provided me with experience in treating an array of mental health needs and treatment modalities. In my practice, I view medication as only one of the many tools to helping improve your mental health. My goal is to work with you and to understand your needs, while encouraging you to advocate for yourself in all areas of treatment. I follow evidence-based recommendations, and always encourage engagement in ongoing therapy in combination with any medication routine we may decide upon. I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, but the mountains have always called to me. I relocated to Colorado in and haven't looked back. When I'm not working, I enjoy playing with my dogs, staying active, reading, cooking, camping, and enjoying the beauty of Colorado!
