Whenever nine-year-old Miyu Ananthamaya Pranoto stomps her white sneakers on the dance floor, crowds jostle for the best view of her freestyle and breakdance moves. The diminutive dance prodigy from East Jakarta has gained a massive following for her effortless mastery of moves that are bread and butter for dancers twice or even thrice her age - and height. Sporting baggy clothes and with her hair tied in a tight bun, Miyu is charting a rare path for girls in conservative Indonesia, where the dance scene is well behind other Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan. And her parents are fully supportive. Whatever her goal is, it is also our goal in life," says her mother Rizky Mellissa. At a recent international contest in Vietnam, one of Miyu's performances went viral on YouTube with 45 million views. Semmy Blank, Miyu's dance mentor, said her talent and passion makes it easy for Miyu to learn difficult moves by heart.

From winning local kid category dance battles in to becoming the champion of Juste Debout — one of the most prestigious international dance events — just six years later, Miyu never saw something like this coming her way. I thought that having different levels could encourage beginners as well as more experienced dancers to tune in so it could reach a wider audience. Miyu's father Haris Pranoto said dance classes keep his daughter in top form as she competes across Indonesia almost every month, from Jakarta to Bali to South Sumatra. I was watching a TV quiz show where the level of questions kept getting higher and higher, and I thought it would be interesting to apply this to dance, which is how I first got started. Miyu says she wants to take her passion for dance to the next level: "I want to be a professional dancer and maybe a teacher, not just for students, but for dance idols". At Starbase, I had the opportunity to actually see the rocket up close and watch the test flight of the rocket. The class ended with Miyu's classmates swarming her for selfies. Apart from the music, I often read quotes from other people. She has also taken up drawing as a hobby. Dance has changed everything in my life. Dance was the only thing that kept me going among the many other things I tried. Or a song that has been significant in your dance journey so far? I want to put on a new show in a different way, adding something new. What is a song that always gets you moving? I consider myself a very positive person, but everyone on the crew is even more positive than I imagined.

Dance has made me the person I am today. I tried all of them. I will never get bored of it because the music determines how I move my body and the mood of the dance.
