Traveller is a science fiction role-playing game first published in by Game Designers' Workshop. From its origin and in the currently published systems, the game relied upon six-sided dice for random elements. Traveller has been featured in a few novels and at least two video games. Traveller is a tabletop game where characters journey through star systems, engaging in exploration, ground and space battles, and interstellar trading. Players assume various roles, such as humans, robots, aliens, or genetically engineered species. The game is influenced by various literary works and emphasizes commerce, sociological stratification, and a mix of low and high technology. The setting is centered around the human-dominated Third Imperium, a feudalistic interstellar empire.

Every Traveller book is now printed in full colour and all core rulebooks and supplements are gorgeous hardbacks, fully updating this beloved game for the 21st Century. None of the marketing materials, nor the published books, mention an edition in association with the rules or other books. The Mongoose communications, as well as the fans, do explicitly reference these books as Mongoose Traveller second edition or MgT2. True to their word, the rules followed the Classic Traveller design, using 2d6 for most character creation and resolution mechanics. It was updated with an events table for failing a survival roll in character creation. It also included a task system similar to MegaTraveller for ease of resolving combat and other interesting events. The rules have been written to cover many chronological periods and settings, but most of its materials focus on the classic era, with an established internal date of , prior to the Fifth Frontier War. When the Mongoose Publishing announcement was made in August , there was some controversy in the Traveller community regarding the fate of the other, then current, Traveller publishers.
