The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners joining the SEC a year early in will transform a league already renowned for its athletic excellence.
It's more than a year before Oklahoma and Texas join the Southeastern Conference and 14 months before the two schools begin their first football season in what should be an ultra-competitive league with 16 members. But the SEC is already whetting appetites for fans by releasing its schedule on Wednesday night. This will be the first campaign the league starts without divisions, creating flexibility to match marquee opponents without regards to East or West designations, while maintaining the rivalries that are so central to the league. The Crimson Tide also will travel to Oklahoma. Among the other nuances, the league schedule will be eight games after a majority of schools at the SEC spring meetings were unwilling to approve an expected increase to nine matchups. Texas and Oklahoma wanted to join the SEC's party , and the nation's richest and most powerful conference was willing to admit entry. Surely those two Big 12 schools aren't the only universities that would like a seat at the SEC's table. By adding Texas and Oklahoma, the SEC showed a desire to expand when there were schools presented that the league wanted. The Seminoles fit nicely into the SEC's footprint and deserve another look. Yes, they're struggling in football, but top to bottom, this is a strong athletic department. Better late than never. FSU won a football national championship as recently as the season, and the program won't stay down forever. It threatens to disrupt Bedlam. Why not add another rivalry with Sooners-Cowboys? Plus, the Cowboys would enter the conference with a chip on their shoulder. I like that.

Georgia president Jere Morehead spoke on why he supported Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC, even though the two schools would serve as competition for the Bulldogs in the College Football playoff. Morehead pointed out that the culture of the two schools fit in well with the SEC and that in the end every single SEC school voted to allow them to join.
