Nike has released the latest generation, the Nike Metcon 9, and I tried the shoe at WIT Fitness in London on launch night, hitting beast mode in a minute CrossFit workout designed to show off what the shoe is capable of. The workout consisted of a barbell complex done with a partner, building to max weight. Then, a snatch-and-barbell burpee combo in a rep scheme, and finally an AMRAP of 24 calories on a rowing machine, 24 toes-to-bars and 24 wall balls. It was a serious workout for the shoe and me. After all that, one thing stood out: these are comfy. I own the Nike Metcon 8 and while both generations balance stability and comfort well, my first impressions are that the 9 does it better. I could switch between high-intensity moves—like burpees —and technical lifts more efficiently. The previous generation now feels comparatively stiff and unforgiving during plyometric exercises and shuttle runs. The design notes promise a wider toe box and a more breathable cross-stitch mesh upper that wraps the shoe. The footprint has been reduced to make room for a pronounced wrap-around rope guard, extending to the medial side of the shoe and into the upper for improved support during multi-plain movement.
Indeed, the rubberized dots took the bullet for the shoe's mesh! Brace yourselves because the Metcon 9 just got heavier than any other Metcon before it.

Their stability has been consistent, which I expected. However, the versatility of cross-training and CrossFit has once again been subpar. The Metcon 9 is designed to be used for lifting, cross-training, and CrossFit much like its eight prior iterations. Compared to some of the older Nike Metcons, the 9 has been the bulkiest shoe to date regarding its upper, midsole, and TPU Hyperlift heel. These changes have proven to be pretty polarizing for athletes. Some lifters have loved the bulkier feel of the 9 while others have noted this shoe to run hot and feel heavy.

Nike didn't seem to notice the more frequent heat waves on the planet and chose to make the Metcon 9 slightly less breathable than its predecessor. Putting the shoe through our smoke-pumping test, we found that the mesh lets the smoke out at a notably slower pace than the Metcon 8. Based on this, we assessed the shoe's breathability with an average 3 out of 5 score. This makes much more sense when we put the shoe's cut-in-half upper against the light. As you can see, the shoe lining below the mesh is so dense, it doesn't even let the light shine through! It is very clear that there is a dense layer of textile underneath the mesh.

It works wonders in weightlifting but is absolutely NOT your best bet for high-impact aerobic workouts or, God forbid, runs! But are they really effective? Never once did we have to stop and make adjustments. After holding the Dremel against this delicate part of the shoe for 4 seconds, the damage was barely noticeable and pretty much cosmetic. Toebox width at the big toe. This turns out to be one of the hardest rubbers in training shoes. It has always been a dilemma for cross-training shoes - you need a firm platform for weightlifting stability but you also want some softness for jumping. No complaints here on our end.
