Asked by pantherpaw9north georgia gmrs, December 6, Hi, I'm new to all this, and as you can imagine, I have lot's of questions. The first of which is this: How much power do I need to use GMRS over a repeater that is about 16 miles west of my house.

I'm looking to hike the Appalacian Trail in the next year and was thinking of taking a GMRS radio with me to communicate with my brother who will also be hiking. Since the area is so tree-filled and hilly, I was looking at the repeater map on here to determine if I'd have decent repeater coverage for most of the hike. I've noticed some of the repeaters are typed as Members Only paid. For example Flagship in Jasper Georgia which covers quite a large section of the Georgia portion of the Appalacian Trail says it's Members Only paid. My question is, how would I access these Members Only repeaters and approximately how much does it cost? I've tried googling, but haven't had much luck. Thanks in advance to anyone able to answer my probably stupid question. You would have to contact the repeater owner to find out the "tones" to access the repeater and how much they charge for its use. Are you hiking together? What kind of distance will you have between you? You may want to also carry something like an InReach Mini 2 for such a trip. I believe that they state that their repeaters are open to "transient" users, so as a traveler, as someone passing through that area, I don't think that they'd give you any grief. There are NO dumb questions; only dumb answers! Just get a sat unit and don't rely on the GMRS radio. Simple and cheap solution that will work on the entire AT.
How can one effectively monitor ALL linked repeaters before transmitting over a wide area and ensure they aren't stepping on someone? I know there has got to be gold in my back yard somewhere down there!

Purchase a Membership. But from this experience I have come to learn, understand and respect the weaknesses of Radio Communications in the time of distress, emergency and disaster. Solid, reliable radio communications is the very back bone of our communities and the country. Being too old to be an active fire fighter, I was still wanting to give back to my community. I did some research and found that this was a perfect place to help not only families, but also volunteer groups within the State of Georgia, who needed effective and reliable communications during emergencies, disasters, and severe weather situations. I also learned that I was not alone in such an endeavor. Upon the discovery of a nation wide web site, I found that over GMRS repeaters throughout 41 states were doing the same thing.
