Since the second half of the 16th century, the number of people who can read and write had increased significantly, and an efficient post office had developed, which enabled the popularization of letters.

Despite the conflation of the terms in recent years, the two are actually quite different. A three-volume novel is exactly what it sounds like — a single story broken into three parts.
