That said, some of my other musical influences would include D. I am influenced by things outside the world of guitars, be it cars, furniture design or Brutalist architecture. The more I build, the greater my admiration of design and designers. Influences within the guitar world would definitely include Florian at Millimetric, a massive innovator and generally lovely guy. Matt Proctor at M-Tone guitars has also been a long time influence as well. One of my closest friends within the business is Jon at Lateral Sound pedals. We live fairly close to each other here in the South West of England, so we actually get to see one another on a fairly regular basis. I love the pedals that Jon makes, and I love his constant need to push himself in developing new sounds and build methods. The voice of reason if you will. There are lots of very lovely and supportive people in this business and I feel lucky to be a part of it, albeit in my tiny niche. J - Your model range currently consists of the DeadBeat and Degenerate, two seemingly similar overall styles, what lead you to those designs, how do you feel they differ and perhaps if you could talk us through your design process too? My design process is rudimentary in the extreme consisting solely of large sheets of paper, drawing curves and a pencil. In some ways putting pencil to paper is the very start of the build process, coming in just before the gluing together of the body blanks. Once my drawing is complete I simply transfer to a template and start chopping!

About this model:. This is where it all started for Odessa. An offset body shape that evokes the golden age of guitar design but with thoroughly modern appointments. The DeadBeat combines no-nonsense aesthetics with precisely planned practicality. Everything feels as it should…from the subtle stomach cut and forearm bevel to the upper fret access and placement of the controls, the DeadBeat is instantly familiar. Neck timbers — usually Maple, but happy to use other timbers, just ask. Scale Length — happy to accommodate most scale lengths, just ask. Hardware — essentially your choice, but Hipshot tuners and bridges work well with my builds.

It sounds odd, but seeing it with strings on really pulled everything together and I found myself grinning very widely at the sight of this photo. User Name Remember Me? The time now is AM. All times are GMT The neck, although a very large D shaped profile and fairly wide nut width, felt 'right' for the longer scale length and I quickly got used to it. That said, some of my other musical influences would include D. No two really looking alike be it through finishes or hardware choices. Theme by Clean Themes. Then for various reasons I left woodwork behind for many years, but I think my time spent working as a carpenter on site during that period can be seen in my guitar designs in that they are very utilitarian. Odessa Guitars are simplistic in their beauty, with great lines, offset inspired shapes and display Mike's obvious love for guitar making. It looks like it's in excellent condition.

Does anyone know anything? A bit odd to some, but I like the nod to each instrument and carrying that styling point over, well I'm glad I did as I love the look of the tuners on Mike's headstock design, and also note his rear headstock decal design which my son Miles absolutely loves. Influences within the guitar world would definitely include Florian at Millimetric, a massive innovator and generally lovely guy. Sign up to our newsletters! It looked superb in person and seeing the shape for the first time, first hand, made me love the design more than I did prior too. But playing it plugged in made me realise my original ideas for the wiring style and switching wasn't quite as intuitive as I thought it might have been. It looks like it's in excellent condition. I want them to look cool, but not to distract too much from their purpose. A little background on the Degenerate, this was the prototype build whilst Mike was working through the design ideas. Thread Tools. No two really looking alike be it through finishes or hardware choices. Mike was an absolute gent right from the start and I couldn't be happier now having two of his guitars hanging on my wall ready for me to play whenever I want too. M - The DeadBeat came first and evolved through a long period of gestation where I did nothing but draw pictures of guitars in notebooks. That meant also I removed the pickup selector switch, as the independent volumes took care of that also. Find all posts by Sonoma2.
