After the quest Briarheart Necropsy talking to Neloth brings up the topic of recent irregularities surrounding the wizard, the death of his steward, to name one such occurrence.

Old Friends is a side quest given by Neloth , after the completion of " Briarheart Necropsy " in which Tel Mithryn is under attack by an unknown force. Ash Spawn killed Neloth's previous steward and part of his tower mysteriously withered. Neloth is being attacked by an unknown assailant. If I walk around the grounds of Tel Mithryn, I might find a clue. After Neloth assigns to the Dragonborn the task of finding him a new steward , and after the withered part of Tel Mithryn is repaired , a third attack causes Neloth to reveal to the Dragonborn his suspicion that the attacks are organized—the same suspicion that Captain Veleth has about the attacks on Raven Rock. Neloth gives the Dragonborn the task of discovering the source of the attacks.

I notice that Reluctant Steward or Healing a House is mentioned in the walkthrough, but not in the Prerequisites section. I'd add them myself, but I think there's more to it than that. From Neloth's dialogue during this quest, he makes reference to Reluctant Steward and Briarheart Necropsy, so I think that one is related as well. If anyone has any other experiences with obtaining this quest, it would be good to find out what the prerequisites are. I noticed that you can in fact sleep in the bed in the stewards house next to Neloths tower and have access to the chest, perhaps thats the housing you get. Was going to add the reward to the quest, thinking of linking it to the house telvanni page, but should I link it to the Telvanni page for morrowind or the lore page? I don't want to add confusion, as you could join the house in morrowind, and it's meerely a title in Dragonborn. Also, is the staff he gives you levelled? I'm not certain if this has happened to any other players but upon bringing the heart stone to Neloth, he exited conversation with me to cast the spell and the heart stone and Ring of Tracking were removed from my inventory, but he did not actually perform it, instead walking around in little short paths.

He bases his fears on the fact that his previous steward was murdered, as well as the recent spate of Ash Spawn attacks. He wants this investigated and gives the player a ring which glows when within yards of said conspirator. Equip the ring received from Neloth. Exit to Solstheim , and head east. The ring emits a blue pulse shortly after leaving Tel Mithryn.

Neloth's Ring of Tracking lets the Dragonborn trace the source of the attacks, that is supposed to be somewhere around the settlement. It turns out the source of the attacks derives from Ildari 's sarcophagus in the graveyard just north-east of Tel Mithryn, specifically from a Heart Stone in it. Note: This heart stone only spawns during this quest, and cannot be found before. The stone is a special quest item. When the Dragonborn returns, Neloth will take back the ring and the Heart Stone. As it turns out Ildari Sarothril , a former apprentice to Neloth, agreed to an experiment that went horribly wrong, supposedly killing her. Apparently not though, since she is now planning her revenge against Neloth.

So, I tried again obviously Proceed to climb the woodworks and follow the tunnel leading southwest, killing all the Ash Spawn that emerge on the way.
