Besides restructured parking options for commuters, some permit holders no longer will need to keep a hangtag or decal on their car when parking on campus. This change is made possible by license plate reading, or LPR technology that will scan license plates. Residential permit holders will continue to use parking hangtags or decals, as will those who fall in the parking categories of reserved, exempt, annual visitor, vendor and Purple Heart. For permitted vehicle owners who prefer to back into or pull through a parking spot, the department is introducing a unique, Ole Miss-branded vanity plate for the front of the vehicle. Those will be available for purchase when permits go on sale this summer. LPR technology also will allow faculty and staff permit holders to register up to two cars to an account so that they may avoid switching the hangtag when they use another car. Patterson noted that it will be important to make sure that vehicle and license plate information is correct when purchasing a parking permit through the Ole Miss parking website.

The University of Mississippi is attracting a lot of attention from their record breaking freshman class and growing number of students. With enrollment soaring and new essential campus buildings being built, the combination has caused some major concerns regarding parking on campus. With multiple construction projects going on at the Ole Miss campus, there has been major congestion in traffic as well as parking issues. Due to the lack of land, the administration needs to pick and choose what is most important for the campus. With three new residential halls being built, the university did consider building a residential parking structure. Unfortunately, this feat is not feasible for the university at this time. A parking structure would cost over 30 million dollars. However, the administration did come up with a more practical alternative to help the parking issue for residents on campus. In the Fall of , there will be a satellite residential overflow lot at the World Pool Trails on Highway 6. Along with that, there will be a Park and Ride satellite bus for the residents that get a permit pass for the new parking lot. This will allow students to get rides back and forth from the overflow lot. A lot of students and faculty have also brought up the question of not allowing freshman to bring their car.

Formed in , the Department of Parking and Transportation originally operated as part of the University Police Department. The University experiencing tremendous growth was a catalyst for a standalone department to focus on the parking and transportation needs to meet this growth. Now a standalone auxiliary operation that generates its own revenue to support various services, the Department strives to meet the growing demand of a robust and vibrant campus. Our mission is to support the University with parking and transit options all while keeping our focus on sustainability and forwarding our Transportation Demand Management goals. We have expanded our surface parking to include meter spaces, carpool spaces, and electric vehicle charging stations as well. All in all, we continue to evolve and are always looking for ways to better service our campus community. To provide efficient management of parking and transportation resources, with a focus on customer service, financial responsibility, innovation, and sustainability. To provide guidance and assistance to the campus community and the public on all parking and transportation matters. To create the most efficient, respected, transparent, and customer focused parking and transportation program in the nation.
