The name comes from the Ovens River , the river in the part of north-eastern Victoria covered by the league, and the Murray River , which separates Victoria and New South Wales. The league features three grades in the Australian rules football competition, with these being Seniors , Reserve-Grade and Under 18s. Currently a home and away season consisting of eighteen rounds is played. Corowa, Excelsior and Lake Rovers were club's that were admitted. These two clubs were largely divided amongst sectarian lines, St Patricks being Roman Catholic and Albury being Protestant and, after much tension, in the two clubs agreed to disband and form two new clubs, East Albury Football Club and West Albury Football Club , with the player base to be drawn geographically. Following the season, a 19 year old West Albury player, Haydn Bunton , who has sometimes been described as the best ever player of Australian rules, [18] was recruited by VFL club Fitzroy. Bunton has remained one of only four triple Brownlow medallists, and the only player to have been awarded three Brownlows and three Sandovers. Cleaver Bunton was also mayor of Albury for 30 years. The newly merged team took on the name of the Albury Football Club. The Pigeons won an absolute classic by four points in front of more than 10, packed into Lavington Sports Ground. A year on from their narrow loss to Wangaratta in the decider, this was redemption for Yarrawonga, while the Tigers will have to wait at least another year to get back to the top of the tree. The footy was predictably red-hot early in the match but Albury began to spend some time in their forward half and were rewarded with the opening goal of the game. Brydan Hodgson played a clever one-two, giving the handball to Tom O'Brien and collecting the return before lacing his shot through. But the Pigeons came up with a quick riposte courtesy of Brayden Coburn, who made no mistake from directly in front after the umpire paid a free-kick for front-on contact. The Pigeons hit the front when Leigh Williams picked out Dylan Conway on a degree angle, 20 metres out, although their lead was short-lived as Albury hit straight back with a quality finish from Morris medallist Elliott Powell. Yarrawonga capitalised on a turnover when Conway marked the ball just outside 50 and, seeing no-one in the goal square, sent his kick bouncing through.
