The Civil War was bloody and devastating and claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of US soldiers. With a path that left many deaths in its wake, there are many places that are said to be haunted by the spirits of soldiers who may still be looking for peace. The haunted strip of asphalt in Houston was home to a particularly vicious and bloody battle, and since then many people have reported otherworldly occurrences, particularly on the Langham Creek Bridge on Patterson Road. There is some dispute as to what happened near the creek and the site of the future Patterson Road bridge. The general consensus agrees that Civil War soldiers engaged in some kind of skirmish or battle on the site. One story suggests that it was the site of a German settlement that was pro-union. The settlers were ousted and killed by Confederate troops who wanted to rid the land of Yankee influence. Another tale tells of pitched fighting between two ragtag militias who somehow managed to fend each other off of the land. There have been several sightings and stories over the years. People have reported seeing ghostly figures as they make the turn to cross the bridge, seeing visions of a pale man standing by the side of the road. They appear for a brief moment, then vanish as soon as your headlights strike. There have been numerous reports of tapping on cars on this haunted bridge.

The route, originally laid in the colonial era, connects the city of Paterson and the Hudson River waterfront. It has largely been superseded by Route 3 , but in the many towns it passes it has remained an important local thoroughfare, and in some cases been renamed. Portions of the road were at times called New Barbadoes Turnpike, from New Barbadoes Neck , [1] the name of the peninsula between the rivers it crossed, the Hackensack and the Passaic. Many plank roads in the United States were developed in the nineteenth century. These roads consisted of wooden boards laid adjacently to prevent coach and wagon wheels from getting bogged down in soft or swampy ground, thereby creating an even surface that would facilitate travel. Normally a toll was charged. This technology was applied to the Paterson Plank Road and similar roads, the Hackensack Plank Road and the Newark Plank Road , which also traversed the Hackensack Meadows to the cities for which they are named. The company which built the Paterson and New York Plank Road, as it was called, received its charter on March 14, The Clifton and Paterson sections of the road are never more than blocks from the former railroad route Erie Railroad Main Line, much of the extra width of the street having been converted into vehicular parking.
