The Detroit Pistons are not the first team to try and build their roster through the NBA Draft and they won't be the last. Building through the draft is not only a way to acquire homegrown talent under team control, but it's like a carrot dangled in front of the donkey fans who keep hoping this will be the draft that turns everything around. It hasn't worked so far for the Pistons, as they are four drafts into their rebuild and have gotten worse, mired in a losing streak that has no clear end in sight. Possible trades between the Pistons and Knicks. Related Story. The Pistons have often been compared to The Process era 76ers, a team, who like Detroit, tore their roster down to the studs, tanked for years to acquire high draft picks, and eventually rebuilt their roster around superstar Joel Embiid. You can argue the results I'd say the Process was an abject failure considering it took nearly a decade of losing on purpose to finally get a superstar for Philly, but it's clear that what is happening in Detroit is actually worse.

The Detroit Pistons sent a heartfelt letter to their fans on Monday, apologizing for their direction in the NBA season. Entering the year, the Pistons expected to be rejuvenated, a legitimate power player in the Eastern Conference. But then Detroit started the season with single-digit wins in the first two months. Then Cade Cunningham was lost to injury. Clearly, at this point, this pivot was part of their overall plan. The Pistons saw the forest for the trees — a waiting Victor Wembanyama. Just take a gander at how GM Troy Weaver characterizes a non-linear path in rebuilding :. While that injury impacted the continuity of our team, it also presented an opportunity for growth from others. Overall, our players have overwhelmingly embraced the core principle of going to work and competing every night. We are in an excellent spot to upgrade our roster this offseason. Not that a lousy roster had much of a chance anyway, but going in their last 22 games since early February is the Pistons waving the white flag, hoping they had the opportunity to draft a generational French superstar. Detroit entered this season hoping to put itself back on the map. If that means penning a probably insincere apology to your fanbase for falling short of expectations, so be it. Now what? That is what we are here for today: Are the Pistons actually the worst team ever to try? There are tanking teams, teams that quit on their coaches, expansion teams, teams that quit on one another, but that is what is so fascinating about Detroit's game losing streak: They entered the season wanting to win, wanting to improve upon their league-worst record from last season , and they certainly do not want to lose to the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday and Tuesday, losses that would tie and break the NBA's single-season record for futility. Billionaire Tom Gores purchased the team in June He has hired four heads of basketball operations and six head coaches. None of it has made a lick of difference. The Pistons have not won a playoff game since Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals, when the first "Iron Man" was still in theaters.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver, in recent comments to Phoenix Suns employees, addressed possible solutions for tanking while noting that he understands why teams would do it when a "once-in-a-generation player" is about to enter the league, according to sources who were present. Calling it a "serious issue" that has sparked "hundreds" of meetings, Silver's comments came this week during a question-and-answer session in the Suns' arena, where Silver also apologized multiple times on behalf of the league office to a large group of Suns employees for workplace misconduct under majority team owner Robert Sarver. During the session, one employee asked Silver about tanking, a theme that is widely expected to dominate the league conversation with 7-foot-4 French phenom Victor Wembanyama -- a potentially franchise-altering prospect -- being projected to be the No. Speaking of a concept in European soccer, Silver told employees that the league has thought about relegation as a potential solution to ensure the worst-performing teams are incentivized to compete. But the commissioner then said relegation would be "destabilizing" to the NBA. In such a scenario, Silver told employees, relegation would essentially mean demoting the worst one or two teams to the G League while promoting the best team or two from the G League to the NBA. But I get it, especially when there is a sense that a once-in-a-generation player is coming along, like we have this year. Silver also addressed a question about league expansion, which he told Suns employees the league will look at more closely once it is through its upcoming television rights negotiations.

The NBA took several recent steps to limit late-season tanking, implementing the play-in tournament and flattening lottery odds, and only five teams have been eliminated from playoff contention in late March. Yet, three games on Wednesday had nothing but draft positioning on the line, and the teams acted accordingly. Not to worry: Any lost revenue for those team owners is offset by eight-figure luxury tax payments from teams actively trying to win. Here I was thinking billionaires opposed taxing the rich to benefit the less fortunate. A fourth game on Wednesday featured the last-place Houston Rockets , who have benched healthy five-time All-Star point guard John Wall the entire season. They are so committed to losing that the Dallas Mavericks felt comfortable giving Luka Doncic Wednesday night off in Houston and still won in a landslide. The three worst teams will enter the lottery with equal odds to secure a top-four pick Odds slide downhill from there. The importance of landing in that range is magnified by a draft class that projects to feature four potential franchise cornerstones: Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero and Jaden Ivey, who form the top tier of Yahoo Sports expert Krysten Peek's latest mock. One of those three spots was up for grabs on Wednesday, when the Thunder hosted the Magic in a battle of the West and East's 14th-place teams.
